The UEA Student Experience Report (November 2010) - summary of the report
From the recommendations in the Union’s Student Experience Report 2010, there have been a variety of actions taken to ensure that improvements are made. The progress of these actions are monitored, but we have outlined the main successes which we have achieved in the last few months here:
Feedback on Exams
The Union recommended that the University should; ‘introduce appropriate feedback for all pieces of assessment including exams, and to move towards embedding formative assessment in all courses as previously recommended’. The School of ENV and all Schools in the Faculty of Social Sciences are running a pilot of exam feedback for groups of students for their exams this summer, and the University’s proposed changes to degree programmes is looking at embedding formative assessment in all courses.
Additional Course Costs
We recommended that the University should; ‘give feedback to the Union’s Academic Officer about the actions being undertaken from the recommendations that the Union made last academic year about additional course costs’. The Union has worked with the University to ensure that in future years, extra costs for students which are not covered by fees are reduced wherever possible, and always made clear to student before they arrive at UEA.
Student Representation
The Union recommended that the University should; ‘continue to work in partnership with the Union to enable students to shape their own education. A culture of effective student representation should be developed in Schools and Faculties from induction. Students should be encouraged to voice problems and Staff Student Liaison Committees should aim to create positive change’. This year, the Union worked well with the University on improving representation, co-branding the support materials which we produce for student reps, organising events for staff who support school representation and holding a lunch for student reps with the Vice-Chancellor.
Timetables
Though there was a long delay in the release of timetables for the autumn semester 2010 due to technological difficulties , the Union previously recommended that the University should ‘ensure that timetables… are published as early as reasonably possible and in an accessible way’, and for the spring semester timetables were widely released before the beginning of the new year and significantly before the start of term. The majority of students also have access to their timetables online.
