Faculty Convenors
The Union is looking for four Faculty Convenors for the upcoming academic year!
What do they do?
Faculty Convenors are a “super-rep” for their Faculty and provide a crucial link between the Union’s Academic Officer and student representatives in individual schools. Faculty Convenors co-ordinate the work of student representatives at a Faculty level and sit on Faculty committees, such as the Learning and Teaching Quality Committee.
From this year onwards, Faculty Convenors apply for their roles and are appointed by a panel. They are no longer elected as this position is now a role paid for by the University, at a rate of a £200 bursary per semester. This was done in order to professionalise the role of being a Faculty Convenor.
Student Representatives will have a lot of contact with their Faculty Convenor, especially those who sit on university committees. Faculty Convenors are here to help support student representatives and will happily answer any questions you might have. Faculty Convenors can also bring together representatives from different schools within a Faculty, which is particularly helpful when addressing an issue that is affecting students in more than one school.
The role of Faculty Convenor is varied and rewarding. Duncan Smith, the Faculty Convenor for SCI 2010/11, had to say about his experience:
“Being a Faculty Convenor was a really useful experience. I had previously been an SSLC rep in Chemistry and found that being a Faculty Convenor gave me more responsibility and the opportunity to work with a network of student representatives. I’m now a part-time student officer and feel that being a Faculty Convenor gave me a good foundation for becoming more involved in representation.”
