£18.50adv |
Earlier this year the multi platinum funk soul brothers, with 4 Top 10 albums to their name, returned for the first time in five years with the album ‘Classic Fantastic’, a party album for a brand new decade featuring collaborations with Roots Manuva and Paul Kaye. The album, which was released on 1st March, burst out of the preceding gloom of the last five years with reviews citing a definitive return to form.
Well known for their raucous live shows, Fun Lovin Criminals wrapped up their Spring tour with a show stopping performance at a sold out Koko that earned them a 4 star review in The Times, who said ‘musically and spiritually this was a show by a band re-born.’
Huey Morgan has also been re-born as a TV and Radio personality, with his award winning ‘The Huey Show’ for 6 music, and the successful Sky 1 show ‘Pet Nation’ that he co hosts with Liza Tarbuck. Huey - who was recently described by The Times as ‘reformed hoodlum, pop star and the BBC’s new darling, Huey Morgan is a 21st-century gentleman’ - has just been nominated for another Sony Award for ‘Music Broadcaster Of The Year 2010’.
The band has embarked on this new chapter with a new philosophy. “There’s this thing called Noetics,” explains Huey. “Which says if everybody thinks the same good thoughts, good things will happen. Likewise, negative thoughts - it’s not rocket science. And we all want the same thing, to be a Fun Lovin’ Criminal. You have to go through hell to get to heaven and now we’re finally out from under a lot of our problems, it’s a brand new day. So let’s go out and do what we love to do.” It’s good to have them back.

Birmingham’s emperors of rock’n’folk Ocean Colour Scene are back with their ninth studio album, entitled Saturday. In a recent poll on XFM of the 100 Greatest Ever British Songs, both ‘The Day we Caught the Train’ and ‘Riverboat Song’ were included. Speaking on the remarkable achievement of 21 years together as a band, Steve Cradock had the following to say:
“We have been on the Scene for 21 years...that is a remarkable achievement and I think it’s because we are about being a great live band...”
Universal Records are set to release a single CD of their greatest hits and a 4CD box set in September 2010. The hits CD and the box set will be entitled ‘21 ‘. It’s ironic that Midlake’s new album is titled “The Courage Of Others” because, if anything, the courage is all theirs. Namely, the courage to do what feels right and stay true to the spirit of artistic independence whilst ignoring any pressure to conform to expectations. The result is the Texas quintet’s third album, their most complete and beautiful body of work yet, best appreciated as a whole in the old-fashioned sense of an album - which makes perfect sense when you know Midlake linchpin Tim Smith’s fondness for the look and feel of past times.
So what’s changed since The Trials of Van Occupanther, their second, hugely loved breakthrough album? Just as that record was in part inspired by the soft(er) rock of the early-to-mid 1970s – from Neil Young and America to Fleetwood Mac – so Midlake’s new album also looks to a slightly earlier, and definitely British, trad-tainted folk sound. It may share the same gorgeously analogue-warm electro-acoustic template as Van Occupanther but it’s a slower, darker and more carved record, both eerier and dreamier.
Plus support from special guests John Grant (The Czars) and Jason Lytle (Grandaddy). Jason and John will be performing individual solo sets - the show starts at 8pm.

Less Than Jake will bring their perfect blend of ska/punk to the UEA in November! It's been a wild and crazy ride for the band since their formation in 1992. They have steadily evolved by always sticking to their musical ideals without being hampered by the influence of emerging trends or record company pressure.
"People have a preconceived notion that Less Than Jake is a ska/punk band, that we're wacky and silly, and that may be a certain side of ourselves live, but there's also another side and that's a beautiful thing about our band - it's multi-headed," says drummer Vinnie. "We can be different things at different times; we can be socially relevant and we can still be musically relevant 18 years after being together, still progressing musically, not only as players, but as far as musical direction. We can jump outside the box of what people expect, and now that we're in control, what you'll be getting is Less Than Jake -unfiltered and over-amplified."

LCR Gigs : Foals
What: LCR Gigs
Where: LCR

Ends: 11pm |

How much?: |
£14 advance |
Five piece Oxford band FOALS make a return to the UEA. The last time they played Norwich (Sept 2008) they sold out, so make sure that you get your ticket to see them early!!!
The band’s much anticipated second album Total Life Forever entered the UK album charts at number 8 ahead of other new entries; Slash, Alicia Keys and Dead Weather. The band have enjoyed a mass of positive media coverage around the follow up to their 2008 debut ‘Antidotes’.
Total Life Forever was recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden during late 2009, by Luke Smith (Clor). The new album showcases a sound as persuasive emotionally as Antidotes was physically. Whereas the latter constantly reinforced its own presence by filling the air with yelping and polyrhythm, songs on the new album - such as disarming opener ‘Blue Blood’, ‘Two Trees’ and the astonishing ‘Black Gold’ - are happier to leave gaps for the mind’s ear to explore. 'Alabaster' is the shell of a song, stripped of its flesh and soaked in natural reverb, giving space for a joyous, anthemic chorus. Emotional highlight 'Spanish Sahara' builds from a still, dry space, into a hazy, hallucinatory soundscape, climaxing into a rush of shimmering guitars and keys. Pop gem 'Miami' retains the band's homespun interweaving riffs and rabid drumming, inspired and loosened by the bliss and sway of classic Balearic disco.
Foals are an independently-minded band, troubled but not torn, intent on choosing evolution over extinction.

2010 marks the 24th year since founding members John Rzeznik and Robby Takac formed Goo Goo Dolls. Most bands that were around in 1986 have come and gone. “Something For The Rest Of Us” is the follow up to 2006’s Let Love In, which marked the Goo Goo Dolls’ 20th anniversary as a band. The album spawned several Top 10 singles, including “Better Days,” “Stay With You,” and the title track, which gave them their record-breaking twelfth Top 10 hit. Their thirteenth, “Before It’s Too Late,” appeared on the blockbuster Transformers soundtrack. Goo Goo Dolls have racked up four Grammy nominations and sold more than 10 million albums. What: LCR Gigs

After a sell out UK Tour last autumn, Skunk Anansie are back for a jaunt in November 2010. With 5 million album sales, one of the most forthright, iconic, and confrontational female lead singers in modern musical history, a six-year back catalogue to make you quiver, Skunk Anansie are back!
Following an eight-year hiatus, Skunk Anansie are re-born, revitalised and as confrontational as ever, fully armed with highly charged, brand new tracks, a blistering greatest hits record. Last year they return with their epic new single ‘Because Of You’ from their ‘Greatest Hits’ record, ‘Smashes and Trashes’ out now.
Written and produced by Skunk Anansie – Skin (Lead Vocals), Cass (bass), Ace (Guitar) and Mark Richardson (Drums) ‘Because Of You’ is bursting with visceral energy. Kicking off with a sinister, nape prickling guitar riff, Skin’s intense vocal, which has never sounded better climbs on top, the track then hits you with a powerful wall of sound, showcasing their raw power and guile.
The ‘Greatest Hits’ record ‘Smashes and Trashes’ is a 15-track career-embracing album. It features classic moments from their first two Top Ten albums ‘Paranoid & Sunburnt’, ‘Stoosh’ and their 1999 album ‘’Post Orgasmic Chill’. From the rejoiceful ‘Weak’ to the anthemic ‘Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good)’ it’s a timeless record brimming with hits, which is translated into the here and now in the form of their three brand new tracks; ‘Because Of You’, ‘Tear The Place Up’ and ‘Squander’.
The live arena is, of course, Skunk’s natural habitat – the band’s personal live highlights include a show-stopping appearance at Glastonbury in 1999, playing Nelson Mandela’s 80th Birthday Party and playing in front of the Dalai Lama.

South London’s favourite sons will return to what they do best this winter when Squeeze take to the road for their biggest UK tour in over 10 years! The boys will invite their fans to “Spot The Difference” at 21 dates across the country, kicking off in Bournemouth on 14th November and concluding by returning home to play three separate London venues in three days.
Releasing their first EP – the cheekily titled ‘Packet Of Three’ - in 1977, Squeeze shot to fame thanks to the pithy ‘kitchen-sink’ lyrics and new wave guitar music that have since become their trademark. Having numbered Jools Holland and Paul Carrack within their ranks, and working with the likes of Elvis Costello and Velvet Underground’s John Cale, Squeeze became a fixture of the UK’s music scene over the course of their 13-album career, before splitting in 1998.
Despite tentatively reforming in 2007, Squeeze have so far refused to tread the well-worn reunion path by trading on their past glories, which have included hit singles on both sides of the Atlantic such as Cool For Cats, Tempted, Hourglass and Up The Junction.
Instead they have gradually been re-establishing the informal live show that made them such favourites in the first place, their festival appearances and gigs to date honing the chemistry that saw co-founders and ever-presents Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook dubbed ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’. They are joined on this tour by fellow Squeeze favourite John Bentley, with the line-up completed by Glenn’s solo band-mates Stephen Large and Simon Hanson.
Over 30 years after ‘Packet Of Three’, will Squeeze fans be able to spot the difference? Certainly not if the infectious enthusiasm that the band still bring to their live shows is anything to go by!

What: LCR Gigs

£21.50adv |
In the last two years, Ireland's Saw Doctors have blazed back phoenix-like from almost two decades of unsung glory. Out of the blue, their rambunctious cover of The Sugababes' About You Now rocketed to No 1 in Ireland, restoring them to their rightful place as that nation's best-loved good-time band. This also prompted the release of their Best of collection “To Win Just Once - Best of The Saw Doctors” which debuted at Number 3 in the Irish charts last year and went on to achieve platinum status.
Fronted by two criminally under-rated songwriters, Leo Moran and Davy Carton, this is the band that entered the record books back in 1990 when I Useta Lover spent nine weeks at number one, becoming Ireland's best-selling single of all time. They followed up with the No 2 hit, N17, and a chart-topping album, If This Is Rock And Roll, I Want My Old Job Back.
Irresistibly singable songs (To Win Just Once, Hay Wrap and Same Oul' Town to name but three), still flowed from Moran and Carton; their stormingly exuberant live shows remained unparalleled celebrations of the spirit of great rock; and their substantial phalanx of hardcore fans on both sides of the Atlantic never wavered in support.
Saw Doctors' fans go home glowing from a gig crammed end to end with songs about real life. The band work the same live magic wherever they play, from the Royal Albert Hall in London to a convent in the West of Ireland, from the paddock at Sandown Racecourse to the front room of a lucky fan who won a live Saw Doctors concert as a competition prize. They will also be appearing at Glastonbury, V Festival and Oxegen this year. In conjunction with their Glastonbury appearance they will be releasing a brand new single from their yet untitled new album due out in August.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club released their fifth studio album, Beat The Devil’s Tattoo, on 8th March 2010. The new album draws a map and embarks on a sonic road trip through American music; from howling front porch stomps on the Chattanooga and beer-sloshing Texas roadhouse rockouts, to swaggering proto-punk sneering in NYC’s basement bars.
