For album two, they’re back, sharp-suited, drenched in Brylcreem with a line in classic, romantic rock’n’roll, soul and blues that’s as sharp as their quiffs.

Waterfront Gigs : BrokeNCYDE / MILLIONAIRES

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£11.00 Advance

Brokencyde began making headlines after the group's video for the track "Freaxxx" spread like a virus and racked up more than 4 million hits on YouTube. Since then, the group has put a stranglehold on the online world, developing an enormous fanbase that helped catapult their debut album, “I’m Not A Fan But The Kids Like It”, to #87 on the Billboard Top 200. Since then, the group has become one of the most talked about musical entities in decades, as MTVU, The LA Times, Revolver Magazine, producer Steve Albini and comic book writer Warren Ellis all cannot stop talking about the band that everyone loves to hate.

On our last record we had a song called 'Schitzo' that took on new meaning as we toured in support of the album. There is a line in the song that says, 'Brokencyde will never die!' and we thought it was the perfect title for this record," says Se7en from Brokencyde. "The title is a big middle finger to all the haters that to try to bring us down by spreading rumors and lies. We've taken all their hate and used it as fire to create this new album."

For their new album, Brokencyde have pulled out all the stops to ensure that “Brokencyde – Will Never Die” is overflowing with salacious crunk. The album gets the party rocking with the sugary sweet pop/dance of the lead single “House Party”, and slips into some down and dirty hip-hop on "Karma Sutra", "My Gurl" shows the band experimenting with contemporary R&B hooks, and Kottonmouth Kings’ Daddy X lays blazes through the reggae infused “High Timez”. Put together as a whole, “Brokencyde: Will Never Die” adds a polish and sparkling shine to Brokencyde’s infectious brand of crunkcore.

"With this record, we allowed ourselves more time creatively to do what we wanted, which enabled us to take things to a whole new level,” commented Mikl from Brokencyde. “This album speaks to our amazing fans that have supported us through thick and thin, but has a little something for everyone so it can appeal to new listeners.”

"I have to say this album is the best work we’ve ever put together,” adds Phat J. “Fans are going to love it, and haters beware because it's gonna destroy the game."

Brokencyde have endured and persevered through obstacles that would have broken bands.

Can you “Party Like a Millionaire?” Chances are you couldn’t keep up with the Orange County duo —Melissa Marie Green and Allison Green — aka the MILLIONAIRES!

MILLIONAIRES bring catchy, fun, electro-pop songs mixed with rap (made by cute, foul-mouthed sisters whom are both barely legal and are always down to get F*cked Up! )

The girls started out as a garage band internet sensation and have transformed into a successful national touring act while never being signed to a label, they know they’re hated by many but they DGAF! They just want to have a good time, doing what they love, putting on a FUN, ELECTRIC PERFORMANCE FOR THEIR TWDC! (Til’ We Die Crew). Millionaires know it’s been a combination of a strong DIY work ethic, a unique sense of style and a willingness to put their dirty, in-your-face songs into the scrutiny of the publics eye that has transformed them from a one-time joke to a respected serious group.

They started their careers headlining two sold out tours and then taking on the Warped Tour ’09 stage, and then to return for two more headlined tours all before their first album. To go along with there unorthodox careers as artists, they just released their debut rap mix-tape which features huge nation wide artist such as Trina, Kreayshawn, Shanel of young money, Diamond, and more, the mix-tape has been viewed over 100,000 times on a website that is host to the lights of Drake, Lil Wayne, and Wiz Khalifa fans, from which they made the top mix-tapes of the month, and hottest mix-tapes of the week, and have earned bronze with over 25,000 downloads. On March 13, 2013 Millionaires released their debut album 'TONIGHT' which rose into the top 100 albums and top 25 pop albums. Billboard.com ranked 'TONIGHT' #43 on the heatseekers album chart.

Millionaires are aware that a lot people have a lot of nasty things to say about them and their music. And you know what? They don’t give a F*ck, keep talking.

Waterfront Gigs : Liqueur @ The Waterfront Studio

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:00:00

How much?:

£6.00 Advance

Liqueur are one of the world’s top tribute bands to The Cure.

Hailing from the fine city of Norwich, the band formed in 2006. All five members of theband are lifelong fans of The Cure and have studied every aspect of the band’s sound and look in fine detail in order to recreate an uncanny recreation of The Cure in their prime.

With a repertoire of over 50 songs, Liqueur are able to construct an all-encompassing set to reflect The Cure’s eclectic styles, from the classic pop of ‘Friday I’m in Love’ and ‘Love Cats’ to the violent intensity of ‘One Hundred Years’ and ‘Disintegration’ to the melancholic atmosphere of ‘At Night’ and ‘Faith’. Liqueur prefer the look and sound of The Cure’s ‘golden period’ and we focus our attention on playing songs from the 1979 – 1996 period, however we do like to throw in a few more recent surprises from time to time.

The Cure wouldn’t be the Cure without ‘the look' and as such Liqueur not only do the hair, clothes and makeup but we also use much of the same equipment as The Cure to make the whole experience as authentic as possible. As with any Cure gig, the atmosphere has to be just right so when it comes to places to play, Liqueur like to pick venues with great staging, lighting and sound re-enforcement, we want our fans to have the best, most Cure-like experience they can possibly have so to us, this is essential.

Over the last few years Liqueur have played shows up and down the UK, always with a fantastic reaction. We have made many friends on our travels, many of whom now travel the country to see us. We love what we do and want you to love us to.

The Band:-

Chris (Robert Smith) – vocals/guitar/6 string bass/acoustic guitar

Daz (Simon Gallup) – Bass

Mark (Boris Williams/Jason Cooper)- Drums/Percussion

Gary (Porl Thompson/Perry Bamonte) – guitar/6 string bass/keyboards

Dave (Roger O’Donnell) – synthesizers/guitar/tambourine

This is an early show from 7-10pm. The Waterfront's regular Club Night is from 10pm - over 18s only. Ticket holders (over 18) are welcome to stay on FOR FREE (ID required).

Waterfront Gigs : John Lee Hooker Jr

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£16.50 Advance

With the wind-driven rain pelting the freezing, asphalt street on either side of him, John Lee Hooker Jr. hides under a car, shivering from the torrential elements and his addiction, praying the police will not find him. At this moment over ten years ago, the blues prodigy has a glimpse of his life with God or the devil at his side. Fortunately for him, family, friends and blues lovers, he chooses God.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Hooker Jr. was exposed to the blues as some children are exposed to a parent who practices carpentry, bricklaying or farming. The son of the blues legend, John Lee Hooker, naturally developed a curiosity and appetite for his father's livelihood. Hooker Jr. performed on Detroit's WJBK radio at the tender age of eight years old and toured with his father throughout his teens. Exposed to blues greats such as, Jimmie Reed, Washboard Willie, and Boogie Woogie Red, little Hooker Jr. would eventually perform his talents at prestigious venues such as Detroit's, Fox Theatre and other upscale Motown clubs in the shadow of his father. By the time little Hooker Jr. turned eighteen, he was a recording artist performing with his father, most notably on John Lee Hooker's, Live at Soledad Prison (ABC Records) release.

The rich heritage of Detroit was very generous to Hooker Jr. on more than one count. Not only was the powerful allure of music intriguing to him, but he also was seduced by the sub-culture life on the streets. During this lull in Hooker's musical quest, he never lost his appetite for stardom but some demons were to be exorcised before he could take his rightful place at the helm. Following the life altering event of his father's death, and with Hooker Junior's strong belief in God, help from family, friends, and fellow musicians, this exorcism was achieved before his first release entitled: Blues With A Vengeance (Kent Records 2004).

Blues With A Vengeance was John's "celebratory redemption". In other words, he would celebrate his redemption through the hard work and dedication it takes to create a musical classic - and redeem himself he did. The newly awakened artist received 2004, "Comeback Artist of the Year Award" from the San Francisco Bay Area Blues Society, "Outstanding Blues Album of the Year" from The California Music Awards (formerly known as the BAMMYS), "Best New Artist Debut" nomination from the W.C. Handy Awards, and "Best Traditional Blues" nomination from the Grammy Awards. Etta James won the actual Grammy award but to be in her company along with fellow nominees, Eric Clapton, Pinetop Perkins, and James Cotton was a strong indication of the direction Jr. Hooker's career was taking.

Cold As Ice (Telarc Records 2006) continued to solidify Jr. Hooker's force as a musical presence. This sophomore recording enabled the artist to reach deeper into his musical inspirations and take a more active role in the total creative process, while simultaneously, learning the intricate business details of the music industry. Cold As Ice was intended to be Hooker's unique sound. The material showcased his Motown roots and contemporary understanding of music into a delightful blues release that was embraced worldwide.

All Odds Against Me (Steppin' Stone Records/Jazzhaus Records Europe 2007) was the first effort by the artist to incorporate his own music without covering any of his father's music. This also seemed like a good time to launch his own record label and take further control of his musical career. Partnered internationally with Jazzhaus Records, the project generated yet, another Grammy nomination along with fellow nominees, Pinetop Perkins & Friends, Buddy Guy, B.B. King and Elvin Biship in 2008 for "Best Traditional Blues". B.B. King would walk away with the award but Jr. Hooker would win more respect and recognition in the realm of blues. All Odds Against Me also introduced Hooker Jr. as "Bluesman". This animated blues superhero, conceived by French brother, Laurent Mercier (Callicore Animation Studios, Paris) is featured as a DVD, included with the audio disk and is the first animated blues artist to come into existence.

From the gravely blues of the Detroit streets to a new era of sound; from the shadow of his father's accomplishments to standing apart from his namesake; from criminal to crime-fighter; from San Quentin to the Red Carpet, its no wonder the album is called All Odds Against Me. John Lee Hooker Jr. has built upon his colorful past as he continues to distinguish himself as a contemporary "Bluesman."

Live In Istanbul, Turkey (Steppin' Stone Records/Jazzhaus Records 2010) is the latest effort by Hooker Jr. This project includes some new material but it mostly consists of a recording taken from the live performance of one of his tour dates in Istanbul, Turkey. The growth of Hooker Jr. is apparent in this live performance. Weaving in and out of his funk, jazz, and blues arrangements, Hooker Jr. dances with the horns, sings with the guitars and grooves to the bass and rhythm as if they are part of him. This recording exemplifies his twenty-first century interpretation of the blues.

In 2010, between sharing the stage with artists such as, Lenny Kravitz, Taj Mahal, and ZZ Top, Hooker Jr. was the musical face of America's prestigious, U.S. Open (CBS). He was also interviewed by the 700 Club, and in 2011, appeared on the cover of Healthy Living magazine. He is currently recording his upcoming project for release in the spring of 2012.

John Lee Hooker Jr. is a living testimony of the fact that your past is just that - your past. Ironically, the same prison that held Hooker was his venue for two separate gigs; one, the place you go as a consequence of bad decisions, the other, a platform to share his musical talents. From San Quentin to Hollywood's red carpet has been an experience few will ever be able to experience. John Lee Hooker Jr. was able to introduce "Blues With A Vengeance" while maintaining a "Cold As Ice" appearance with "All Odds Against" him and sing about it live in Istanbul, Turkey - and ultimately, sharing it with the world. Though all of Hooker's recordings are diverse, they share a common bond. Hooker Jr. is proof that demons can be defeated. Through all his releases, he convincingly displays the years of sacrifice, love and determination on his quest for making his own mark in the music industry as John Lee Hooker Jr. and not just the son of the great John Lee Hooker.

Waterfront Gigs : The Flatliners + Gnarwolves @ The Waterfront Studio

£8.00 Adv

Punk rock used to be about haggard road warriors. Before all the breakdowns and flat irons, there were busted transmissions and collect calls home. The Flatliners grew up believing in the later and rejecting the former, and after seven years playing together, they’re unleashing Cavalcade, their third full-length record and an epic sonic testament to the life they’ve chosen.

Over the last four years, the Flatliners have spent almost thirty months in vans, dive bars, and concert halls across North America, Europe, and Japan, building up a dedicated following with a sound that mixes the endless fury of ‘90s skate punk with the nuanced, intelligent songwriting of classic post-punks like the Replacements and Hot Water Music. After releasing the ska-punk tinged Destroy to Create (Union Label Group) in 2005, the band evolved into a harsh melodic machine with 2007’s The Great Awake (Fat Wreck Chords), completing their transition into a vital modern punk unit with the Cynics 7” (Fat Wreck Chords) in late 2009.

For Cavalcade, the Flatliners once again teamed up with long-time producer and friend Steve Rizun, recording sporadically between tours in their hometown of Toronto over the course of 2009. Seeking to immortalize the last year of their lives on the road, the end result is easily the band’s finest hour; from the thrashy immediacy of “The Calming Collection” to the dub-influenced “He Was A Jazzman”, it’s the sound of a band hitting their stride musically and finding their voice lyrically, exploring the idea of unity through disconnectedness, of positivity in uncertain times. Driving home the theme are the numerous guest appearances on the record: members of Cancer Bats, A Wilhelm Scream, Dillinger Four, The Snips, Junior Battles, Permanent Bastards, and the Expos all contributed to Cavalcade. Add to that the presence of veteran punk Fat Mike, who flew up to jam with the band in November of 2009, earning an additional production credit and making one of the band’s childhood dreams come true.

They’ve grown up on record and in front of a crowd of like-minded punks. They’ve made sacrifices to keep the wheels of their van on the road, and Cavalcade is the reward. It really is, as the band says, “a call to arms to all who travel throughout the world on the wings of their creativity.”

Formed in the dirty back alleys and dive bars of Toronto, Ontario in 2005, THE CREEPSHOW has redefined the saying “No Rest For The Wicked”. Since their inception, the band has brought their genre-defying blend of country-tinged, psycho punk rock n’ roll to over 25 countries worldwide with plans to conquer many more as soon as possible. Fronted by the fiery Sarah “SIN” Blackwood (guitar/vox) and backed by the swarthy Sean “Sick Boy” McNab (stand-up bass/vox), The Reverend McGinty (sermons/organ/vox) and the righteous Matt “Pomade” Gee (drums), THE CREEPSHOW is an explosion of live energy that is a tasty treat for the ears and eyes alike… Whatever you do, don’t you dare write them off as just another psychobilly band. While their lyrics draw inspiration from b-movies and early horror films, they’re also full of intriguing insight and personal stories dealing with everything from addiction to anxiety to love gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Steven Adler Personal Statement

The former GnR drummer wants to address the recent personal information that has been publicly addressed and let you understand his choice, in his words.

“I picked up a bottle and drank. This occurred a few times and that is a few times too many. I knew that this had to permanently stop. That is the moment I picked up the phone, before it got out of hand, to get help.

I had kicked hard drugs several years ago and now it is time to get rid of the urges of drinking alcohol.

I am at a great facility and will stay here until I am comfortable to be home to work the program on my own.

I love you all for understanding, being patient and supporting my decision.

Like my peers, I will beat this too, so I can return to music and beat my drums!”

Following the success of their three critically acclaimed EPs Facedown, Sex and Music For Cars and a sold-out debut headline tour, Manchester indie outfit The 1975 will play a show at The Waterfront in September.

Critics at Pitchfork Magazine have favourably compared them to The Big Pink. Sex was described by Paste Magazine as "equal parts ethereal and synth pop", with "haunting" and "smooth" vocals. Their "mellow", stripped down style was praised for its lack of "attention-grabbing production theatrics". Though generally acknowledged as an alternative rock group, they have been influenced by diverse genres including electro-pop, electronic music, guitar pop, and R&B. Vocalist Matthew Healy specifically cites Talking Heads, My Bloody Valentine, Michael Jackson, Brian Eno and Sigur Rós as musical influences; he states that his greatest influence is the oeuvre of filmmaker John Hughes.

Waterfront Gigs : Sam Gray + Emma Stevens + Owen McGarry @ The Waterfront Studio

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£8 Advance

Since bursting onto the scene in 2011 with the Radio 2 play-listed debut single ‘Cartwheel Queen’ Sam Gray has gone from strength to strength.

The talented singer/songwriter spent that year a special guest on the sold-out Overtones UK tour, playing at prestigious venues including the London Palladium and performing to some 40,000 people. His album Brighter Day wound its way in the Top 10 singer/songwriter albums on iTunes and his fan base continues to grow each day thanks to radio support from more than 40 stations. He was also the subject of a Channel 4 TV documentary, and topped it off with a mammoth tour of over 70 Caffe Nero outlets nationwide.

In the summer of 2012, Sam has shifted to a more soulful sound. His single, ‘This Girl’ released in August, doffed its cap to classic Motown, blue-eyed soul and general good-time intelligent pop. With over a quarter of a million YouTube views, it seems the general public is loving his slight bend in musical direction. And there’s more to come. Think Otis Redding meets the more ballad-driven strains of Elvis Costello with a dash of the Style Council and you’re getting there.

Born and raised in Hull, Sam grew up playing in bands on Humberside before slowly gravitating across the M62 to Manchester, which remains his base to this day. Whilst in Manchester he was discovered by legendary drummer Steve White (Paul Weller, The Who, Oasis) who became his manager, producer and general overseer. White, along with his team secured Sam a publishing deal with Notting Hill Music and a recording contract with the Transmission Recordings label. He also got Sam in the studio with highly sought after producer, Brendan Lynch (Weller as well as Primal Scream and Ocean Colour Scene).

As well as performing and generally playing a star-in-waiting, Sam is also an accomplished writer having crafted tunes for The Voice and Hollyoaks star Abi Phillips. At the time of writing he is very much a songwriter in demand.

Sam has just finished touring with pop-giant Peter Andre on his ‘Up Close and Personal’ tour which began in mid-November and spanned over 30 dates nationwide.

Too Much Of A Good Thing was released on 4 February 2013 and followed by a single ‘One Night Stand’ on 10 February. Like ‘This Girl’, the album has definite echoes of Motown and soul, kicked through with modern textures and a contemporary feel. His recent performance on BBC Breakfast catapulted his album to #12 in the iTunes album chart. With a few exciting announcements to come and his new single ‘Hand me a Ticket’ coming out on the 24 March, 2013 looks to be a fantastic year to be Sam Gray!

Support from Emma Stevens and Owen McGarry.

Waterfront Gigs : Nina Nesbitt

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 18:30:00

How much?:

£8.00 Advance

In many ways, Nina Nesbitt is a typical teen. She thinks about boys and growing up, mistakes made and lessons learnt, while watching the world change around her. She is adamant about an issue one day and changes her mind the next. She is both bold and daring and on the shy side.

But behind the bright blonde mane and the soft Scottish brogue is an 18 year old with extraordinary talent and a rare determination. Nesbitt doesn’t just brood about typical teen issues, she sets them, bewitchingly, to song.  That she got her first guitar just three years ago, couldn’t begin gigging until she reached 16 and only finished school last summer makes her achievements to date remarkable.

Born and brought up in Edinburgh by pop-loving parents – her Swedish mother loves Abba and Christina Aguilera and introduced her only child to Eva Cassidy; her dad is obsessed with Roxy Music – Nesbitt initially wanted to be an author.

“I was an extremely shy kid,” she says. “But from the age of 6, I wrote short stories, which I started putting to music when I got a keyboard at ten.”

Nesbitt first sang in public in her final year at primary school, when she took part in a talent show, singing Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful. She entered other talent contests, began playing acoustic nights at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus (when Scottish licensing law allowed) and posted covers of early idols Kelly Clarkson, Ellie Goulding and Taylor Swift songs on YouTube. She used Ultimate Guitar to teach herself chords and continued to confront her emotions by turning them in to storytelling lyrics about love lost and friendships formed.

Nesbitt composed on her keyboard until she got an acoustic guitar. Overnight, she found a blueprint of her sound. One of the first songs she wrote on guitar, Standing On One Leg, about growing up, broke her in to the music business after a chance meeting with Ed Sheeran at a radio gig in Edinburgh last summer.

“I was chatting to him and asked for tips on becoming a singer,” says Nesbitt. “He handed me his guitar and told me to play something. I sang Standing On One Leg, nervously, but I must have done okay because Ed immediately offered me a gig in Glasgow.”

That gig led to an invitation to support Sheeran on tour and a guest spot at his show at Shepherds Bush Empire, where the pair sang Hallelujah after only an hour’s rehearsal. Example became another famous fan when he stumbled across Nesbitt’s striking, stripped-down cover of his song Stay Awake on YouTube and, after exchanging tweets, booked her as support on three arena dates last September.

For nine months, Nesbitt turned down offers from labels to sign her. Determined first to build her own fan base and develop her sound, she ignored advice not to post original songs on YouTube and saw interest in her sweet, feisty folk-pop soar.

By the end of 2011, BBC Introducing had picked up on Nesbitt’s independently released, debut EP, Live Take, and broadcast a session with the singer/songwriter on Radio 1. At the start of this year, she toured Europe with Ed Sheeran. In April, she released her second EP, The Apple Tree, comprised of five self-penned songs about growing up, recorded in Surrey with producer Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, Paloma Faith).

Nesbitt’s pure voice, intriguing way with a melody and heartfelt, simile-strewn lyrics about past relationships, learning to be honest and days spent dreaming about what might have been proved her potential when it shot in to the iTunes Top 10, peaking at No.6, and topped the iTunes singer/songwriter chart. Fearne Cotton fell for the EP’s infectious, upbeat title track, The Apple Tree, playing it every day for a week, before it was placed on a Radio 1 playlist.

Since then, Nesbitt has wowed a packed tent at T In The Park, written or co-written twice as many songs as she needs for her debut album, due out early next year, and finally signed a record deal, with Island – on her own terms, exactly as she intended.

Which brings us to Boy, Nesbitt’s first major label single. A significant step on from her early songs, Boy boasts a fuller, poppier sound with beats, percussion, electric guitar and layered vocals, but retains the singer’s trademark breezy melodies, storytelling lyrics and sing-song vocal style on verses on which she barely has time to draw breath.

“Musically, it’s definitely a departure,” says Nesbitt. “And it's indicative of what's to come on my album. I actually wrote Boy 18 months ago, but I’ve learnt quite a bit about production from recording in a real studio, which has made a difference to what I can do with my music.”

Nesbitt recently relocated to London to begin recording her debut album, which she is co-producing with Gosling.

“I met Jake backstage at a show last year,” says Nesbitt. “I’d never recorded in a real studio and I didn’t want to go in to one of those expensive, intimidating places. The moment I saw his studio, I loved it. It’s a wooden hut in a field in the countryside. It’s so chilled, it’s the perfect place for me to record. Now I just can’t wait to get started.”

This is an early show from 6.30pm-10pm. The Waterfront's regular Club Night is from 10pm - over 18s only. Ticket holders (over 18) are welcome to stay on FOR FREE (ID required).

Waterfront Gigs : Local Natives

What: Waterfront Gigs

£16.00 Advance

Much has happened between the band’s critically-acclaimed album Gorilla Manor and the release of Hummingbird. From rave reviews to brilliant television performances, Gorilla Manor launched the band onto the global stage, saw them headlining theaters throughout America and Europe, opening for bands like Arcade Fire and The National, and winning them lauded slots at major festivals around the world. Upon their return home from the road, the band built out a rehearsal space and studio in an abandoned bungalow in Silverlake, allowing them to write and experiment extensively with new sounds and arrangements. Keeping their uniquely collaborative process intact, this ultimately led to the band utilizing new instruments and songwriting approaches, challenging themselves to grow from the comfort space of their established aesthetic.

The band says Hummingbird was created from the emotional framework of being stretched between two opposite poles. In the two years following Gorilla Manor’s release, the band saw the highest highs and the lowest lows they had ever experienced together. While many of their wildest musical ambitions were coming to fruition, personal relationships faltered or fell apart, and a close family member suddenly passed away. The songs on Hummingbird embody that similar dichotomy – they are fragile and powerful, opulent and spare, tense and poised. When it came time to properly set these songs to tape, the band did their initial tracking in Montreal, and then decamped to Brooklyn, enlisting as co-producer The National’s Aaron Dessner, whom they had recently befriended while touring together. It was the first time they had ever recorded outside their native California, and relocating became the physical manifestation of working beyond what was familiar for them.

Shining opener “You & I” is the album’s calling card, bathing synthetic drums in warm organs and surfy guitars, and the band’s signature sky-high harmonies. “Heavy Feet” marries hand claps and sparse chords with a driving snare and one of the most remarkable choruses on the album, while “Ceilings” sounds like Fleetwood Mac with a dub bass groove. “Colombia,” written for a member’s mother who passed away unexpectedly last year, is the album’s swollen heart moment, a love letter from a son to a parent which grows in beautiful, orchestral complexity around a simple, plaintive chorus. Like all of Hummingbird, the song carries with it not just a melodic richness, but a quality of catharsis and grace – a moment to be examined and ultimately enjoyed.

“They are blistering live – alt-country edge and sheer class.” Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

“ahab is the real deal – top-notch” - Simon Mayo, BBC Radio 2

Following the release of their self-recorded 2009 CD a.h.a.b., Callum Adamson (Guitar & Vocals) and Dave Burn (Guitar & Vocals) were invited to play a residency at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge – Nashville Tn. They asked Seebs Llewellyn (Bass & Vocals) and Luke Price (Mandolin & Vocals to join them and create a larger, richer sound. After playing together for two weeks, the band as we now know it, formed.

ahab returned to London and spent two months busking, which is where their sound took shape – Four part harmonies over great songs. The band created a stir and were warned by Police not to perform at markets again as the crowds were becoming a hazard.

In August 2010 ahab played Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival on the strength of a YouTube video of them busking. ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris watched them storm the 15,000 strong crowd from the side of the stage and invited them there and then to record a session for his show. At this point ahab had not released any material for purchase.

In November 2010 ahab released the “No King” e.p. This consequently led to legendary producer John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses, Rodrigo y Gabriela) recording their “KMVT” e.p which was released on Navigator Records in October 2011. BBC Radio 2 enthusiastically supported the key track “Wish You” with regular prime time plays.

‘KMVT’ was also rush-released into the Scandinavian territories as a result of the excitement ahab created at Denmark’s Tonder Festival. “Wish You” was play-listed on Denmark’s national radio station, NPR4.

Throughout the summer 2011, ahab were building a name for themselves performing at over 25 festivals both at home and abroad and then in November 2011, ahab joined navigator stable-mates Bellowhead as guests on their sell-out UK tour playing to 20k people.

ahab spent 2012 on the road in the UK, Europe and Australia.

Because of their extensive touring schedule the current band have yet to release a debut studio album (planned for 2013) and thanks to overwhelming demand from their fan base they released in October the Live album – “Live in London” – featuring 14 tracks (5 previously unreleased) which is now available on general release. The initial pressing sold out during the pre-release tour!

“ahab are so attuned their voices work wonderfully in harmony as well as on their own.” Zoe Radas, Beat magazine – Australia

“Their modern, catchy, guitar-rich alt-country/pop songs really buzz.” Martin Chilton – The Telegraph

Waterfront Gigs : The Cat Empire

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£20.00 Advance

The musical landscape, while certainly a vast and complex one, strewn with pebbles, boulders, monoliths and mountains, is generally a well-ordered place. Bands stay within their borders, and the music matches the hair, and everybody knows what tribe you belong to. But every now and then, a band has to ask themselves, ‘Who am I?’.

The Cat Empire have been asking themselves this question for over a decade. But when your whole musical concept is about transcending genre, and when a large portion of your performance is constructed out of pure improvised energy, it can be hard to know what to call the music you are creating.

In the early years, and after their first major release (The Cat Empire, 2003), the band found themselves, more often than not, being reduced to a series of slashes. The jazz/reggae/funk/latin/gypsy/hip hop tag grew longer and longer, but it was an apt description. The band would jump from one genre to the next, many times within a single song, it didn’t matter what it was, as long as people were dancing.

For over a decade now, and through various recordings, The Cat Empire have carved themselves out a unique place in the musical firmament, as a band with no guitars, with no easily definable style and no corresponding haircut, but a band that can step onto any stage in the world and make the crowd move. More than move, in fact. Make the crowd lose themselves in a frenzy.

But the question of what to call their music is as difficult to answer today as it was ten years ago. The long line of slashes just doesn’t cut it anymore, and the music has grown out of its ‘multi-genre’ concept into something wilder, a spontaneous explosion of melody and rhythm that contains many flavours, but is undeniably a new country.

Always changing, always exploring the boundaries of their mutable and uncertain identity, the band seem to have reached some kind of event horizon on their new album. But clearly, as always, this music is for dancing. The rhythm is front and centre, a beat that belongs to no single nation.

Sometimes in music there occurs a raucousness of sound that turns off our thinking brain and leads us into the depths of our dancing body, where forgotten creatures stir in the dark places of the imagination. It is this feeling that The Cat Empire have harnessed so well on their new record, a feeling of beautiful chaos, of ancient ritual and glorious colour, all caught up in the magic of the beat.

There will never be a single word to identify this music, but the essence has been there all along. If you go back to the very beginnings of the band, on an early demo, it is there in the lyrics to The Night That Never End:

Oh how the gods look down and frown?

At those who never stood and said

‘My name is no-one’

And went a little mad....

Waterfront Gigs : The South

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:00:00

How much?:

£22.50 Advance

The South were borne from the ashes of The Beautiful South after they split in 2006.

Formed in 1988 The Beautiful South had a string of hit singles such as Old Red Eyes Is Back, Rotterdam, Don't Marry Her, Perfect 10 and Number One single A Little Time. Their greatest hits album, Carry On Up The Charts, was one of the fastest-selling albums in UK history, entering at Number One and staying there for weeks, becoming one of the country's most popular albums ever. After 20 years, ten studio albums, five greatest hits compilations, thirty-four chart singles, 15 million record sales worldwide and performing in front of millions of fans, when time was called on The Beautiful South in 2008, not everyone was ready to leave the party. Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler, lead singers with the band - along with departed songwriter Paul Heaton – were having too much fun to get out the pipe and slippers, and so The South was formed. Joining the duo were fellow mainstays from the original touring band: keyboard wizard Damon Butcher and the potent horn section of Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson that brought so much to the live shows. Armed with a sensational back catalogue of hits such as ‘Song For Whoever’, ‘Perfect Ten’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don't Marry Her’, ‘You Keep It All In’, ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’ and many others, there is a long way to go on this particular road.

This band has history and pedigree. Dave Hemingway’s musical career stretches back into the Eighties. He became a founder member of The Beautiful South after the demise of The Housemartins, who had enjoyed a sustained purple patch and many hits before calling it a day in 1988. Whilst bassist Norman Cook went on to become superstar DJ Fat Boy Slim, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway proceeded to form the new band in December 1988. Right from the off, The Beautiful South seemed to defy the normal logic associated with pop bands, not least for the fact that they stayed together for 20 years.

Over the life of the band, they produced many self-penned hits and had several number one albums – they scored their only number one single with the Dave Hemingway / Briana Corrigan duet ‘A Little Time’. A globally successful band, members of The South have performed these songs in front of hordes of fans from Hull to Houston. They love the material and know what will keep the fans happy.

2013 - The South continue to supply new, fresh, caustic pop on their debut album "Sweet Refrains", which was released in November 2012 on Zoo Records to critical acclaim.

2013 will see them performing these songs from this album alongside so many of the Beautiful South hits.

The South may not be so Beautiful anymore, but they certainly have history. And the future looks bright...

Waterfront Gigs : Orphaned Land

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£10.00 Advance

Orphaned Land, the pioneers of oriental metal music and warriors of light will play stages all over Europe and present the new studio album "All Is One".  This release is the band's 6th full length and marks another big step forward, it is the logical evolution from the last studio release "The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR".

Singer Kobi Farhi explains the material as follows: ""I'll say it plain and simple - "All Is One" is ORPHANED LAND's best album so far, I feel that we took all aspects to a new level - the way we write, arrange, play and produce. We recorded the album in 3 countries (Turkey, Sweden & Israel) and it turned out so strong, we can't stop listening to it. The album is very rich in sound with more than 40 people participating (choirs, violins, and many traditional instruments, too). Our secret recipe was always the fact that unlike many other bands, ORPHANED LAND doesn't follow ONE master mind that writes everything, we work in a way that All Is One. We create our music in a perfect blend of synergy and harmony and all the band members are a part of this process, we translate the album's title and message exactly in the way we work, and we always hope we could give a bit of an inspiration to the people in the tragic Middle Eastern lands. We have fans all over the Middle East, we live in a place where huge amounts of people who consider themselves enemies still share one thing in common, they are all fans of ORPHANED LAND, and in these lands of orphans and bloody holy wars our only weapon is music, and hopefully we will grow to understand that All Is One."

Three years have passed since the release of The Never Ending Way Of ORWarriOR (Co-Produced with Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree) and in that time Orphaned Land have toured the world, brought their message to the people, and almost 20 years into their career, continue to cement their reputation as band with a purpose. Something beyond melodic death metal, black metal and folk metal, Orphaned Land doesn't base their music on myths that other bands sing about; they focus on situations in the real world that are happening right here, right now. You'd be hard pressed to find any other musicians in Israel that have influenced so many people in outside the country's borders, and in the eye of opposing religious views Orphaned Land are, in many ways, considered enemies. There's no escaping the fact, however, that the band's music has broken down those barriers and unified a community. It wasn't a new age band or a jazz band that brought people together; it was a Middle Eastern heavy metal band called Orphaned Land.

This has been acknowledged by the fans, who did the unthinkable and started an online petition in 2012 to nominate Orphaned Land for the coveted Nobel Prize. Many metal fans felt strongly about the band's commitment to inviting the Arab world to listen to their music in spite of resistance and outright bans from Arab League countries. Thousands of people from all over the world have since signed the petition.

"I could never imagine in my wildest imagination that one day an Israeli band would be followed by thousands of Muslims from all over the world," says frontman Kobi Farhi, noting that Orphaned Land are the proud recipients of four Peace Awards issued by their Turkish brethren. "If we do a show in Istanbul, Turkey - which is the only Muslim country where we're allowed to play - people come all the way from Iran, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan just to see us. These are enemies that are fighting each other coming to see us as one group of people. I'd say that historically the Jews and Arabs are brothers because we are all descendants of Abraham, but the conflict and the differences are so big that we've forgotten that. Discovering the fact that our music is the instrument to remind people that we are all one is shocking to me. I never imagined that blood enemies would open their eyes because of it. That's why the title of the album is All Is One."

Orphaned Land's lyrics are politically charged most of the time according to Farhi, but not from the point of taking sides. The band is committed to reflecting the political situation in their corner of the world, but they never claim to be for or against any one point of view. All Is One continues their tradition of working and writing as a collective, and if fans go back and explore Orphaned Land's lyrics from the '90s (Sahara - 1994, El Norra Alila - 1996) they'll encounter the same themes and concepts as presented today. "The music is just played better and the concepts are made stronger now."

Fans will never hear one Orphaned Land album sound like another. Some patterns on All Is One are Orphaned Land trademarks, but the band is always open to experimentation. This time out, for example, Farhi's growls are almost non-existent. In addition, the songs as a whole are catchier and shorter compared to previous outings, and more "in your face." That said, by no means has the band gone commercial. Not even close.

All Is One was mixed by the critically acclaimed Jens Bogren (Kreator, Amon Amarth, James LaBrie, Devin Townsend Project, Opeth) and was recorded in three different countries: Israel, Turkey and Sweden. Ironically, countries that are Jewish, Muslim and Christian respectively, which strengthens the Orphaned Land message of unity through music. Over 40 musicians were used to flesh out the sound of All Is One, including 25 choir singers and eight classical violin, viola and cello players from Turkey. Farhi, for his part, considers All Is One "the greatest album we've made to date."

"We felt that we've done very complex albums in the past, we've proven that we know how to be the most complex band in the world if we want. But this time we had the feeling that, coming from a very complex region, it's time to make an album that would be fun to do and fun for the fans to hear. A lot of the songs are very sad and tragic, but they're a little easier to digest the messages in the lyrics. We wanted to make an album that's easy for any metal fan to understand the lyrics from the very first listen."

"Our feeling is that we were able to bring our music to a new level on All Is One," says Farhi. "I hope the fans will feel the same way."

Whitesnake took them on the road, Judas Priest asked them to support, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Motorhead, then France and Spain came calling.

2012 and Electric Mary crossed the waters to the home of classic rock for the very first time, and the punters came from everywhere for the short stay. Waterfront Gigs : Woe, Is Me

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£10.00 Advance

When somebody stabs you in the back, don’t turnaround and do the same thing. Go directly for the face. Confront your enemies, stand up for yourself and fight through adversity: literally, figuratively and every way in between. When it comes to creating art, don’t hold back. Put it all out on the table.

That’s the message of Woe, Is Me, whose personal story of triumph through shared struggle blazes a shining pathway for their fans to follow. And it’s a point-of-view delivered through an engaging live show where crowd-participation is a must.

In Woe, Is Me, the sludgy, aggressive bottom end of vintage nu-metal collides with modern breakdowns and electronics-enhanced atmosphere, alongside the melodic sing-a-long anthem style of A Day To Remember and the arresting emotional ferocity of screamo standard-bearers like The Used and My Chemical Romance; all with a powerful new twist. When a fan asked the band on Twitter to describe their jaw-dropping and brutal yet deliciously poppy and inspiring album Genesi[s] in just five words, their reply was simply this: “Really fucking catchy and heavy.”

After a lineup shakeup that would have decimated lesser bands, the Atlanta-bred six-piece has risen like a phoenix from the ashes with their sophomore-slump-killing new album, Genesi[s]. Woe, Is Me’s second offering is truly a rebirth. It’s the beginning of something new, something of vital importance to the modern music scene that carries with it a message of consequence.

The band silences all doubters with these words, from “A Story to Tell”: “You don’t have the backbone that everyone believes you do/ so talk your shit / I’ll give you a reason to.”

Genesi[s] tracks like “Nothing Left to Lose,” “I Told You Once” and “Family First” have taken the blueprint laid down with 2010’s Number[s], blown it to pieces and rebuilt it stronger than before, ushering in an even bolder, in-your-face sound filled with musical confidence and bravado.

Woe, Is Me features two incredible singers whose versatility and power add dynamic dimensions. “This is exactly where I’m meant to be,” Hance Alligood declares in “Call it Like I See It,” decisively speaking for the entire band. “There’s not a chance in hell that you can take this from me.”

The fans first got a taste of Alligood when “Vengeance” hit iTunes in the fall of 2011. He has a melodic croon that could melt radio dials just as assuredly as co-voalist Doriano Magliano’s growl gives death metal’s finest a run for their money. The pair joins Woe, Is Me founding members Kevin Hanson (guitar) and Austin Thornton (drums) as part of a reconfigured lineup that is primed and ready for battle against the forces of mediocrity and repetition overcrowding the scene. Brian Medley (bass), Andew Paiano (guitars) and the rest of the band honed their craft on the road, analyzing and emphasizing their strongest elements together.

“Our music is what it sounds like to kick someone’s ass but to have fun while you’re doing it,” Thornton says proudly. “We’ve been through a lot of crap and we’re trying to show kids that you can triumph if you persevere.” The band recognized the basic components of songs from bands like New Found Glory and grabbed a hold of what made them smile. “There’s a reason why you turn on certain music in your car and when you’re hanging out with your friends,” notes the drummer. “That’s something our music lacked a little bit. We were tired of that. So our new music is heavy as hell, the heaviest we’ve written, but also the most catchy and melodic.”

More than ever, Woe, Is Me is focused on the big picture. They are aware of the power of insightful lyrics delivered with catchy melodies, the way that music can shape and take hold of someone’s experiences in a positive or sometimes negative way. “What we say can truly affect someone’s life,” Alligood notes with humility. Part of that impact on their listeners lives involves empowering them with forceful words of strength. “There were songs that would help me through anything from a breakup to something with my parents,” the singer adds.

Woe, Is Me works hard to craft the type of songs that will connect with people in deep and meaningful ways; the type of songs found all over Genesi[s]. When the band looks out in the crowd and sees people screaming the words back at them, they know they’ve accomplished something bigger than themselves.

How much?:

£12 / £11 (nus) Advance

Whole Lotta Led - Four Become Five!

After twelve years with the same line up (and having just beaten the length of time Led Zeppelin were together), Whole Lotta Led have undergone a change in line-up.

Sixteen years on from their formation, the band have recently changed their singer and drummer and have increased to a five piece with the addition of a keyboard player.

New vocalist, Lee Pryor, has an impressive four octave vocal range which enables him to hit all the high notes with great ease and accuracy that Robert Plant was so famous for. Filling the drum stool is Charlie Hart, a lifelong Zep fan, who is relishing playing the amazing drum parts of his hero John Bonham. Last but by no means least is David Wykeham-George who as well as playing keyboards will also be doubling up on guitar.

Don't worry though, founder members Nick Ferris (guitar) and Geoff Hunt (bass) are still there, continuing the legacy and ensuring the standard of performance is as high as it can be.

The band have always eschewed the use of wigs and costumes, instead they concentrate on the music and endeavour to perform the songs as near as possible to the original album versions.

If you haven't seen the band before you'll be well impressed and if you have seen the old band, come and witness the amazing changes, we think you'll agree, Whole Lotta Led just gotta Whole Lot Better.

Given the thumbs-up by no less a guitar god than Jimmy Page himself, Whole Lotta led are THE Led Zeppelin tribute band.

Further information about the band can be found on their website www.wholelottaled.co.uk

Whole Lotta Led

• The UK's ONLY full time professional Led Zeppelin tribute band.

• The biggest Zep tribute in the UK.

• Recommended as one of the UK’s top tribute bands by ‘Classic Rock’ magazine.

• Have performed over 1,200 shows throughout the UK.

Recommended as one of the UK’s top tribute bands by ‘Classic Rock’ magazine.

What others have said about Whole Lotta Led:

“You’re getting great reviews, I wish you all the best” Jimmy Page

“Whole Lotta Led are not Led Zeppelin in any way shape or form, their gigs are all about the music, just like Led Zeppelin’s were” - Sunday Express

“If you get the chance don't even think twice about seeing these guys perform.” - BBC Look North

“Get out and see them they're worth a journey too if they're not playing at your local. I travelled 1.5 hours to get there, others I met travelled further/longer. My point is they are a bit special, so worth the effort.” - Geoff Campbell

“Whole Lotta Led are not a look-a-like tribute act. They make no real attempt to resemble the original band and this doesn't matter a bit. Like all the classic acts, Led Zeppelin let the music speak for itself, Whole Lotta Led duly follow suit” - BBC Wiltshire Sound

“The greatest Led Zeppelin tribute on the circuit. Led Zeppelin themselves would most definitely approve!” - The Guildhall, Gloucester

“As bands go I think these guys are pretty special - they're tight, know their stuff and deliver it superbly. As tribute bands go I think these guys are in a league of their own. Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham they're not ... but then they never claim to be either.” - Theatre Gwynedd

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£15.00 Advance

Mostly Autumn are very proud and excited to present the Ghost Moon Orchestra tour promoting their brand new album THE GHOST MOON ORCHESTRA.

After being voted Best Band of 2012  in the Classic Rock Society poll and following their  Best Band – Best Live Act – Best Album (Go Well Diamond Heart) – Best Female Vocalist - Best Guitarist – Best Drummer awards in the Classic Rock Society 2011 poll, Mostly Autumn surely deserve to be called "The best band you have never heard"

Since forming back in 1996, Mostly Autumn have garnered themselves a name for their relentless touring schedule and outstanding live shows.

They have built a loyal and cult following since their first album twelve years ago and in that time such luminaries as the late Richard Wright of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple's Jon Lord and the BBC's own Bob Harris are amongst their many fans.

Mostly Autumn has also toured as an invited support act to Blackmore's Night, Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull, as well as being special guests at Bryan Adam's Murrayfield Stadium gig a few years ago. That alone should give some indication as to the calibre of the band.

Their musical palette is diverse and while they draw on influences from the golden age of seventies’ rock, they have developed their own unique sound and style that both captures some of the essence of that heady era and yet looks forward into the future.

Bryan Josh is that rare beast – a hugely talented guitarist who knows how to play with feeling and for the song.  His soaring guitar, always drenched in pure emotion, at times recall the golden era of guitar heroes such as David Gilmour but never outstays its welcome, always leaving the listener wanting a little more. Lead vocalist Olivia Sparnenn is a true talent, the range and beauty of her voice is world class.  The magnificence of Iain Jennings on keyboards, complimented by a rock solid yet fluid rhythm section - Andy Smith (bass), Gavin Griffiths (drums), Liam Davison (rhythm guitar) and the delightful vocals and multi instruments of Anne-Marie Helder, make Mostly Autumn a band that will enthrall you and awaken memories of what real music is really about.

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:00:00

How much?:

£8.00 Advance

The Filament's debut album 'Skull and Trombones' was released in 2001 on New Blood Records and tours with The Casualties, Deadline and Roger Miret and The Disasters followed this release. The Filaments gained a reputation for their immense live shows in the UK, and on the European mainland. This record was accompanied by a split 7 inch single with Deadline entitled "Punk Unity."

Their second album ‘..Whats Next?’ was released in 2004 on Household Name Records. This time the band showed a greater depth in song writing; UK '82 style punk was mixed with a wide range of influences including Dub, 2-tone influenced ska and Psychobilly. Following this release The Filaments went on to tour alongside popular U.S acts such as The Horrorpops and Leftover Crack, as well as playing festivals including Glastonbury, Wasted / Rebellion (Blackpool), Rude Boys Unity (Geneva) and Punk 'n' Disorderly (Berlin).

After quite a break this amazing live band are back and better than ever!

Like their contemporaries Snuff and Leatherface, Goober Patrol formed in the late 1980s, bringing together influences from the British pop punk and American hardcore scenes; reviewers have highlighted the Goobers sound as equal parts Stiff Little Fingers, Circle Jerks and Snuff. In the early 1990s the Goobers received lots of praise from fanzines and mainstream music presses for their live shows plus their two albums and two singles co-released on Boss Tuneage and Lost and Found records. Whilst drinking lots of booze on tour in the UK and Europe with Green Day, Samiam, R.K.L. and The Mr. T Experience; they released a joint EP with the latter on Punk As Duck Records. After receiving this split EP, much missed renowned BBC1 DJ John Peel got them into the Maida Vale BBC studios to record a session for his radio show which gained the Goobers a more widespread U.K audience. The Goober’s music and – perhaps more importantly – drinking then brought them to the attention of NOFX’s Fat Mike who signed them to his legendary Fat Wreck Chords label. Their first FAT release Vacation (1996) displayed their mastery at concocting contagious, hook-laden punk tunes, whilst the follow-up The Unbearable Lightness of Being Drunk (1999) mixed offbeat Brit humor and serious personal overtones with raw, hardcore, punk ‘n’ roll. In the late 90s and early 2000s the Goobers toured non-stop around America, Canada and Europe with Tilt, Down By Law, Bouncing Souls, Strung Out and Diesel Boy, and made a couple of really stupid videos for FAT’s Peepshow compilations. Now, following a break to go back to university, work in the Christmas cracker factory and for bass player Tommy Goober to tour the world in the Toy Dolls, the Goobers are back

Plus - CHAS PALMER-WILLIAMS -  Ex Lightyear frontman turned acoustic and FAINTEST IDEA - Norfolks Finest Rudeboy Street Punk
