Sports Association Membership (SAM)
What is SAM?
Sports clubs are one of the best ways to meet people and build lasting friendships at university. They keep students active and healthy, contributing positively to their studies. Most importantly, university sport is fun and students like doing it; that's why we provide some of the best funded sports clubs in the country.
Compared to most students' unions, we fund sport very well. Due to large Union subsidies, students can access sports such as rowing and sailing for as little as £45 a year.
The total cost of running sports clubs to the Union is £253,000 a year (2008/09). This is obviously a huge proportion of the Union's expenditure. As such, we ask students joining sports clubs to make a contribution to this cost through joining the Sports Association. Sports Association Membership (SAM) costs students £35 a year.
What do students get?
By buying a SAM card, students are contributing to the cost of sports clubs at UEA, and they also get covered by the Union's insurance for undertaking activities such as training and competitions. For more information about the Union's insurance for members of the Sports Association, check out the Key Facts or email our Sports Clubs Co-ordinator, Ian Welch ([email protected]).
In order to make a claim on your personal insurance provided through SAM, Please contact Ian Welch in Union House, [email protected]
Your SAM card will also give you access to SportsNight, held in the Blue Bar every Wednesday. SportsNight is a great chance to unwind and either celebrate or commiserate after a day of competition. SportsNight offers SAM card holders 20% off all draught beer/cider products and post-mix soft drinks.
