Volunteering at UEA

Why Volunteer?

Students can find volunteering work very rewarding. You are not paid but you have unique opportunities to make a difference to people's lives or to the natural environment. You can use your skills and experience to help people in the local community or spend your time working with others on conservation projects.

Volunteer work helps with your future career. It proves to your future employer that you have developed personal and life skills while at university and that you are a committed person. This is especially useful for CVs, application forms and job interviews.

What sort of opportunities are there?

You can do voluntary work that is related to your subject of study or a completely different area. Many of the volunteer projects will include training, which will be useful both on the project and in later life. You will have the chance to meet people from outside the university who you would not normally meet. You can join a project with other students or on your own and make new friends.

UEA Volunteers works with the UEA Union of Students to help you find the right opportunity. There are UEA led projects you can join for occasional or regular voluntary work (beach cleans, conservation work, community work) or you can work with charities and other local organisations outside UEA. Even if you just have a few hours a month to spare, there will be some opportunities for you. Our projects can be commitments on a regular weekly or monthly basis, or just one-off opportunities to do some voluntary work.

For insurance purposes, all volunteers should be over 18 years of age.

Where can you find out more?

You can visit the EmployAbility Shop on the Square which is also the home of UEA Volunteers. Look at the website for up to date voluntary work: www.employability.uea.ac.uk/vacancies (click on Voluntary for type of work)

There is also a UEA Volunteers Society that is being re-formed in 2010-11. If you would like to be part of this student society to help promote voluntary work please email: [email protected]
