Why let good times go bad?


Drinkaware provide a huge range of advice on the truth behind drinking, including:

  • Guidelines on recommended intakes
  • Tips on staying safe when out drinking
  • Lots, lots more!

Safer drinking isn't about avoiding alcohol altogether, but managing how much you drink to ensure you remain in control of your evening. Key messages include (and you might see these on a poster, beer mat, or coaster near you!)

  • Get watered, not slaughtered. Alternating alcoholic drinks with fruit juice or fizzy drinks is a good way of pacing yourself- so why not have a glass of water between each drink? The Union's bars provide free water whenever they sell alcohol.
  • Eating isn't cheating. Having dinner or a snack before you go out drinking isn't cheating- it's important. Food slows the rate at which you absorb alchol, meaning that drinks don't go 'straight to your head'. It's also worth having a snack (even if it's not the healthist thing!) after you've been out- so look after for a burger van!
  • Don't take off without your wingman. It really isn't smart to go out drinking by yourself: so make sure you've got someone with you. 

Drink spiking

Always be aware of the risk of drink spiking.

  • Keep an eye on your, and your friends' drinks.
  • Don't leave drinks unattended, or drink things you haven't seen being mixed or poured.
  • Use spikies/caps were available (the Union currently provides spikies- for bottles- and are looking at getting caps for other containers).
  • If you suspect your drink having been spiked: contact the police, and visit A&E. You'll need to have a blood test to confirm its happened, and that'll only work up to three days after the incident. Also, report your suspicions to someone if the venue: either behind the door or on the bar.
