Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Union of UEA Students?
The Union of UEA Students is the students' union of the University of East Anglia. Every student at the University of East Anglia automatically becomes a member of the Union. The Union of UEA Students wants every student at the University of East Anglia to thrive in the learning environments they are offered. We help students do this by representing students to bodies such as the University and our local Councils. We also provide loads of ways of having fun, not just in our bars and nightclubs but also through over 150 sports clubs, societies and peer support groups.
How do I become a member of the Union of UEA Students?
When you become a registered student at the University of East Anglia you automatically become a member of the Union of UEA Students. You can opt out of this by contacting our Chief Executive or the University. The Campus Card issued to you by the University acts as your membership card for the Union of UEA Students, which is why you'll find our logo, as well as that of our national body, NUS, on the back!
Who runs the Union?
The Union is run by its members i.e. the students of the University of East Anglia. They give their views, opinions and ideas to a group of annually elected Student Officers who oversee the running of the Union on the member's behalf.
Where is the Union building?
The Union building is located in the heart of the University of East Anglia campus. Our address is: Union Place, University of East Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ.
The Union is a 'Not For Profit' organisation - what does this mean?
All the cash we generate from the shops, bars, club nights and events is used to fund all the great things the Union has to offer including a free Advice Centre, clubs and societies, and your own newspaper, radio and TV station. It's not that we don't make a profit, because we do. It's what we do with it that's the difference. The extra money we make gets ploughed back into running the Union for our members.
Who funds the Union?
The Union of UEA Students receives a grant each year from the University of East Anglia. We also use money generated from the shops, bars, club nights and live events to fund development and upkeep of the building, offering members a range of free or reduced rate service. We are a 'Not For Profit' organisation.
Is the Union part of the University?
We see ourselves as a central part of University life. We work very closely with the University authorities to improve students' education and we are a key part of the University's aspiration to provide "a student experience second to none".
The Union is, however, independent of the University. Students lead the Union and set our policies, which challenge the University's way of working to make students' lives better. Although in part funded by the University, students set our budgets and priorities and the University has no control over our political direction.
How is the Union financed?
The Union is an exempt charity with 62% of its net income being generated by its commercial services. The remaining 38% is provided by the University through both a grant and occupied accommodation donated by the University.
You can find more detailed information about the Union's finances here.
What is the constitution?
The constitution is the governing document for the Union. It explains how decisions are made, as well as rules for elections, for running clubs, societies and peer support groups, and all other areas of the Union's activities.
