 Student Safety

Dear students,

The local police have advised us that there has been a spate of burglaries that have targeted students over the last couple of days and that this might well continue.  They would urge students to act on the following advice:

STUDENTS LIVING IN RESIDENCES:

Please make sure you lock your room every time you leave it – even if it’s just to pop to the kitchen.  DON’T prop your doors open at all, and check who you buzz in to your block – a thief used this to get into a residence this weekend.

STUDENTS LIVING OFF CAMPUS:

Be aware that in the run up to Christmas and in the current economic climate, burglaries are far more likely to happen.  Student houses are often targeted and are easily identifiable.  In a burglary that happened in the Golden Triangle this weekend, the intruder was able to get access to the house because the residents had left the door on the latch.  Please make sure that you always lock your doors and ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your house over the Christmas break.

For more information about student safety, check out this guide: http://uusu.org/files/student_survival_guide.pdf

Whether it’s true or not, students have a reputation for being easy targets with lots of valuables (mobiles, laptops and cameras etc).  By using your common sense, you will be able to avoid these types of problems.

According to the local police, this autumn has also seen a high rate of cycle theft on campus, and it would appear that there are organised gangs working to take bikes that are parked here.  If you are bringing your bike to campus, the police advise that you use a good quality D-lock (not a cheap chain) and make sure that you’ve had your bike marked with your post-code (for more information about this, please pop along to the Security Lodge).   More advice can be found here: http://www1.uea.ac.uk/home/services/units/estates/Security/Cycles

If you ever have any worries about your security, please do get in touch with the UEA Security Lodge on 01603 59 2352 or the local police on 0845 456 4567 or in an emergency call 999.

Many thanks,
