How do you get to Uni?
I live on campus! I just walk on over...
I walk. Keeps me healthy and saves money!
 I bike. Even healthier...
 I take the bus.
I drive. And then park wherever I can...
I get here by some other means of transport... (?!)

OCCUPATION OF ARTS 1

Statement from the Union of UEA Students
A group of nine students are currently occupying a section of the Arts Building in protest over the situation in Gaza. This may displace lectures and seminars, as well as members of University staff who cannot access their offices. Students are advised to check the University Portal for updates and class locations (https://portal.uea.ac.uk).

These students are acting independently of the Union of UEA Students and its policies.

The group of students have made several demands which include a public condemnation from the University of the actions of the Israeli military, education aid, twinning with the University of Gaza and scholarships for Palestinian students.

The University has indicated that, while it is willing to negotiate, it will not concede to these demands while under duress. Representatives of the Union have observed the situation and helped to facilitate the negotiations.

While we support the right of students to peacefully protest, we cannot support action in contravention of the University’s statutes and the law without Union policy decided by our members, the students of UEA.

This issue will no doubt be debated at today’s meeting of Union Council, which is in Lecture Theatre 3, 7pm. All UEA students are welcome to attend and debate this issue.

Was the occupation of the Arts building a sensible or acceptable course of action? How would you feel about it being the start of a trend? What would happen if everybody with a global agenda started holding UEA to ransom? Hey, perhaps I should disregard the privilege UEA has granted to me by allowing me to study medicine here, take over one of the buildings and make demands for Tamils being tortured and killed in SriLanka, then we can take another building and make demands for civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. While we are at it, let us throw Darfur and the Congo into the bag. Piracy is OK as long as you are doing it for a noble cause (not).

What does UEA owe Gaza? Where is the logic in any of this? I am surprised the people responsible were not kicked off campus.

Am I thinking this way because there is something they know that I do not? Does UEA sponsor Israel or something?
