Union House office shake up moves Exec Officers

The offices upstairs in Union House are undergoing a change over the next couple of weeks as various Executive Officers and Union staff will be moved around.

Major changes include the Communications Officer and the part-time Executive Officers moving into offices next to the Grad Bar, while the staff who support clubs and societies will be moved next to the Finance Office.

Rowena Boddington, the Union’s Communications Officer, said “the changes have come from a review about the layout of the top of Union House.  We wanted to ensure that students can find who they’re looking for, rather than trailing around the labyrinth of corridors to find different officers.

“By moving the Executive Officers together with key members of staff, we aim to prevent students from being pushed from one side of the building to another, while also ensuring that the Executive Officers can work as a team on projects and communicate effectively.”

Martin Jopp, the Union’s Finance Officer, said, “Jacki and Ian’s move will be really helpful for clubs and socs – no longer will committee members have to trail between the Finance Office and Ian’s Office – they’ll be all in a line, while students looking for their representatives will find them all in one space.”

The office formally used by the Communications Officer will become a Board Room for Union Committees and Conferences, freeing up 1.33 to be used far more by Clubs and Societies.

“Hopefully this is a much more pleasant room that the Clubs and Socs room, and together with 1.31 and 1.28 provides some desperately needed space for Union clubs, socs and peer support groups” added Martin.

Rowena saw the move as beneficial to the long term health of the Union.  “The changes and new layout are going to take some time to get used to, and I’m sure they’ll be some hiccups along the way, but it’s all part of trying to make the Union more effective at being the voice of UEA students while supporting clubs and socs to do what they do best.”

The office move is ongoing over the next couple of weeks, and follows a decision by Union Council last month to investigate possible alternative uses for the Snooker Room in Union House so that there is a campaigning and representation “hub” in the Union building.
