Result and Report: Eastern Region Tournament 1, 30/10Sunday 30th October 2005 Eastern Region Tournament 1. Mens Results The Men had a mixed tournament with 2 wins and 2 losses. The obvious difficulty came in playing together for the 1st time so communication was always going to be hard but it improved as the day went on and boosted spirits ahead of the Student cup on the 12th November. Below are the individual match scores and the final results table. 1st Match vs Cambridge Uni 2 Lost: 30-20 1st match was always going to be shakey. However bad passing and worse serving from the UEA team saw a team who later in the year we would be expecting to beat take control with relative ease. 8 missed serves and 2 free balls not being picked up gave CUVC2 their 10 point lead and thats not including any errors in hitting and passing. Next time we play them it will be a good way to measure how much we are improving. LOST 30-20 2nd Match vs Cambridge Rhinos Won: 27-23 2nd match against Cambridge Rhinos was a great improvement on the 1st match. A better warm up from the team put us in a more confident mood going into the match and all round better play and in particular serving saw us establish a comfortable lead in the game. We were able to try out a 2 setter system and some other new things whilst still pushing on for the victory WON 27-23 3rd Match vs Peterborough Lost: 26-25 This match against ex national league Peterborough was undoubtedly our best performance of the day. The team seemed to click, serving (although still too many were missed) good passing, accurate setting and thoughtful attacks saw a great match. The 1st point of the game was lost through fussy refereeing and it can be argued that the match point was lost through the refereeing not being fussy and picking up the net touch, however this was irrelevant as other decisions went our way. Toby managed to cement his new name OUT!!! by taking a ball on the sideline while the whole team screamed out at him. Although we let Peterborough have the edge at the end of the match it was a very encouraging performance. LOST 26-25 Final Match vs RAF Marham Won: 31-19 The guys started this game as they ended the Peterborough game, consistent serving and good attacking play saw the team open up a lead that left the players comfortable enough to try out different hits and serves. It was a good effort given we had been sat round waiting to play for 2 hours. Maybe because of the comfort with the guys we maybe didn't rack up the score as high as we could have. The last 10 serves of the game were very lacklustre with points going back and forth because of petty eras. Something we have to cut out of our game. Despite this it was a convincing victory and claimed us 11th place in win loss final positions. WON 31-19
So the UEA Mens team finished 11th on the Day. But with the format of the Tournament and they way in which every point counts, they actually currently stand in a useful 7th Place out of 16. This is a good position to push on from at the next tournament on the 13th.
Womens Results The girls team enjoyed a very successful tournament, especially considering it was the first time they had played together. When i got a chance to see them they looked strong and in great shape for the SC Qualifiers. The serving passing and blocking seemed very good and they ended the day having only lost once to Norwich Ladies (NVLD2) but managed to beat them in the second game. I only know the results as i didnt get to see much of the girls but if any of you want to add anything your more than welcome. 1st Match vs Norwich Ladies Lost: 28-22 2nd Match vs Cambridge Uni Won: 35-15 3rd Match vs Norwich Ladies Won: 28-22 Last Match vs Cambridge VC Won: 28-22
This puts the Girls currently at 2nd place and gives them a great start to the series. Now they must aim to push on from here for the next few tournaments see if they can finish 2nd or Maybe higher. The girls will go from strength to strength but so may other teams and now others will aim for them. But congratulations on achieving such a good position in your first tournament. Infact well done too all involved both Mens and Womens teams and Supporters. The next tournament is 13th November (sunday) hopefully the day after both teams have put themselves in a strong position to qualify to the Student Cup Finals. |
