‘We Are The Champions’

UEA won the student second team national korfball competition for the second time in three years after producing their best korfball of the season in Manchester.

A long journey up on the Friday night was followed by a good night’s kip in the local Travelodge in preparation for Saturday’s exploits.

UEA could not have asked for a better start to the day, as they found themselves two goals to the good within a minute as first Rebecca Hubbard sunk a stunning long shot before captain Adam Knights doubled the lead to leave Nottingham University reeling. The score line soon read 3-0 as Alex Macnab opened his account for the day as UEA saw out the game with relative ease to open their points tally for the day.

Buoyed by the manner of their victory over Nottingham, UEA were understandably confident heading into their second match into against Cardiff’s 1st team. An even opening saw some pleasant korfball from both sides before Cardiff scored a quick-fire double to put UEA on the back foot.

A flurry of goals were to rain in, as first Mike Lavine scored a superb long shot, despite calls from coach Jimmy Seymour to shoot from closer to the post before Cardiff restored their two goal advantage. Jimi Hall then scored another quality goal but within moments Cardiff were back in command as they scored their fourth to close out the match 4-2.

UEA went into the final group game knowing that only a win would suffice as they took on an Edinburgh side with an identical record to themselves: won 1 lost 1. A change in the starting line-up was in order as UEA sent out a different eight to the previous two games.

These changes were to pay dividends as UEA took an early lead after Adam Knights bamboozled his marker before a clever turn from first year Harry Low gave him the space to put UEA into a 2-0 lead. Despite Edinburgh clawing one back, it was UEA, thanks largely to their stern defence in particular from debutant fresher Sarah Bell, who were to progress to the quarter finals.

UEA’s fourth match of the day saw Laura Burman and Matt Unsworth make their full debuts against tournament hosts Manchester. Despite dominating the opening quarter of the match UEA were unable to find a way through and they were made to pay when Manchester took the lead with a long shot.

This side has shown throughout the season that it is not one to accept defeat without a fight and that was not about to change. Spurred on by UEA’s supporters, who were outnumbered 5:1 by home support, the team equalised through Adam Knights, who had already had a penalty controversially ruled out, his third of the tournament. In truth, Manchester were stronger after this and UEA did well to contain their opponents and with no more goals, penalties were required to separate the sides.

Misses for both teams were followed by successful attempts from Lizzy Jenkins, Alex Macnab and Alison Bland before Manchester missed their final penalty to propel UEA into the semi-final.

This was not one for the faint hearted with collisions, missed penalties and goals aplenty in this fiercely competitive affair. St Andrews were in the lead after some unsporting behaviour from their attacking division but yet again Adam Knights chipped in with a goal to level things up. UEA received a let off as St Andrews failed to convert their penalty although they once more found themselves trailing within minutes to another shot from distance.

However, UEA dug deep and once again from pulled themselves level as Alison Bland and Julia Cloke both bagged their first of the day to put UEA in front for the first time. The scoring wasn’t finished there as St Andrews scored again to level the score at 3-3. However, Bland was to provide the final twist in this tale, as with under a minute on the clock she scored her second of the match to give UEA the chance to emulate the achievements of the second team in 2006.

And so to the final and the culmination of all of the hard work put in by everybody throughout the season. A rematch with Cardiff meant that UEA would have to overturn the result from earlier in the day to claim the coveted trophy.

UEA came racing out of the traps and Harry Low took full advantage of some slack defending to score two running in shots early on. Despite a vast number of attempts from both sides, there were to be no more goals in the opening half. At half time, few were predicting the glut of goals that were to follow least of all coach Ashworth who advised the team that Cardiff were ‘getting more and more frustrated and were not going to score as things stood’.

Within half a minute UEA had conceded. Alison Bland, however, restored UEA’s two goal cushion before Cardiff made it 3-2 almost immediately. Just minutes after Adam Knights had put UEA two up for the third time in the match, Cardiff stormed back with two goals in as many minutes to wipe out the deficit.

Yet again UEA called upon their seemingly endless reserves of energy and spirit; Lizzy Jenkins scored a crackerjack of a long shot, Alex Macnab converted his of second of the tournament and Alison Bland grabbed her second brace in as many matches whilst Harry Low completed his hat-trick with one from distance.

A late goal from Cardiff did nothing to dampen the spirits and the scenes of the jubilation at the end reflected the real sense of achievement felt by the team, who had worked well as a unit all weekend.

Captain Adam Knights, who sustained an injury in the second match but played on regardless beamed, ‘We won because every player played with the commitment and passion that UEA are known for. I couldn’t have wished to captain a better bunch of people.’

Knights, who scored against every side UEA faced, added, ‘Everyone was focused and whether on the sideline or on the pitch gave 110%. We wanted it more than any other team there.’

The weekend was topped off by an evening of celebrations which began in the curry mile and ended in an underground club before most crashed on the floor of our host Jenny’s living room.

The journey back was at times a lively affair, with a combination of suspect song selections from Mike Lavine, along with Jimmy Seymour’s curbalicious driving, whilst Laura Burman was determined not to relinquish control of the coveted trophies.

This weekend would not have been possible, of course, without UEA’s dedicated coaching team of Paul Ashworth and Jimmy Seymour, both experienced first team stalwarts, who guided UEA to their second trophy in three years in this competition.

Ashworth was full of praise for his team, ‘The seconds played excellent korfball throughout the tournament, the whole team gave 100% and fully deserve to be national champions.’

Coach Seymour echoed these sentiments, ‘Well done to the second team - 100% deserved and it has been a pleasure watching you all get better.’ When questioned further about the social and the after-effects of his excessive alcohol consumption Seymour expressed that he was ‘disappointed that I was the only one to be sick.’

All in all, few would disagree that the weekend was a perfect finale to a season that will live long in the memory of this year’s second team.
