The Union has a number of policies that guide its actions, campaigns and general approach to things.
Only Union Council and policy ballots can pass policy. Once passed, policy lasts for three years.
The Union can have policy on pretty much anything as long as it doesn't do any of the following:
- Seek to alter or rescind policy of a higher body;
- Do anything illegal;
- Seek to amend the Constitution or propose policy in contravention of the terms of the Constitution, unless it is a properly submitted Constitutional amendment.
This said, all UK Students Unions are restricted to only campaigning on issues that effect students as students by the 1994 Education Act" . This means that whilst we can have policy on anything from the political situation in Iraq to Tesco's banana buying policy, the Union will not be able to activly campaign on this issue; it will exist as a statement of opinion rather than anything more proactive.
If you think the Union should have policy on a certain issue, why not do something about it? Take a look at the sections on policy ballot and Union Council to see how you can get more involved. Only official Council reps can submit motions to Council, but policy ballots can be called by any student.
For advice on writing a policy motion contact the Academic Officer or Communications Officer .
