The committee structure within each School varies according to its size and needs, but all Schools will have student representatives sitting on two committees: the School Board and the Staff-Student Liaison Committee (SSLC). To become a School rep, watch out for emails or publicity from the School Office, or contact your School Secretary. School Board and SSLC reps are separate from Union Council School reps. For more information about Union Council, click here.
School Board is the highest decision-making body in a School. All proposals for changes and new courses, as well as the financial and administrative direction of the school are dealt with by School Board. The number of student reps varies. Sometimes the student positions are designated, e.g. one student from each year of study. In other Schools, the places are open to any students.
- Staff-Student Liaison Committee
From September 2004 onwards every school is obliged to have a Staff Student Liason Committee. According to the University Code of Good Practice for Student Representation , the purpose of Staff-Student Liaison Committees(SSLCs) is to “provide a forum for the informal discussion of matters both academic and non-academic”. SSLC should provide student reps an opportunity to raise issues informally before they are raised formally at a School Board meeting, and there should be more student members than staff. Most Schools have a member of faculty responsible for SSLC, sometimes the Senior Advisor. The chairperson may be a student or faculty member. Either way, the School should provide notes of the meetings and administrative support if required. These notes should be seen by School Board and the Board should consider any items referred to it.
Student reps should also be offered regular meetings with the School Director for Learning, Teaching and Quality. To find out who the Director is in your School, contact the Academic Officer.
All school reps are provided with training and support by the Academic Officer.
