Campaigns

NUS has a large number of campaigns each year, two or three of which are labelled ‘priority’ campaigns. For 2003/04 these were funding the future and Health and Housing .

NUS also has a number of other campaigns running throughout the year, including environment , anti-racism, anti-fascism , Internationalism . At NUS Conference 2004 an ‘International Students Campaign’ was created. The campaigns NUS runs and how they prioritised are set at its annual conference, and Unions will have a chance to question the NUS Executive Committee on these campaigns at regional conferences throughout the year.

NUS also has a number of campaign areas labelled ‘liberation’ campaigns – the black students campaign, lesbian gay and bisexual campaign (LGB), students with disabilities (SWD) campaign and the Womens Campaign

Liberations campaigns exist for those who are discriminated against both within the education system and who are also oppressed by wider society. So for example, a mature student only falls under that category whilst at University, so may be discriminated against as a mature student whilst in education, but not within wider society. On the other hand, LGB students may experience homophobia both within and outside of the education system. The liberation campaigns have their own quasi-autonomous policy making conferences and autonomously elected officers.

To find out more about Liberations Campaigns at UEA, contact the Liberations Officer or the Women's Officer or take a look at the UUEAS Peer Support Group pages which contain a number of student led liberation groups.
