There are student representatives sitting on more or less every decision making committee throughout the University.
Whilst student representation at school level is organised by the indvidual Schools and departments, representation on central level committees is organised through the Union of UEA Students and the Graduate Students' Association.
A number of student representative committee places are automatically allocated to members of the Union Executive Committee with specific responsibility for that area. For example, the Academic Officer sits on the Learning and Teaching Quality Committee (LTQC) and the Library and Learning Resource Committee (LLRC), whilst the Welfare Officer sits on the Students Affairs Group (SAG).
The rest of the student representative committee places are allocated at the first meeting of Union Council in early October.
There are also a number of spaces on University committees allocated specifically to postgraduate students. These are allocated by the Graduate Students Association .
Union representatives on University committees are accountable to Union Council, and the relevant rep should report on any issues raised in University committees at Union Council meetings. Union Council is also an excellent opportunity to gain student opinion on issues that are going to be discussed at University committees.
You can read reports from committee reps here , and you can take a look at the Union Council agendas and minutes here .
The only committee the Union doesn’t have any representation on is the Planning and Resources Committee. Unfortunately, this is also one of the most important committees in the University, discussing allocation of money and resources, such as new University buildings and residences. We are constantly lobbying the University to gain representation on this committee.
In 2002, the Union initiated a scheme to ensure all student reps on University committees have adequate support throughout the year. To find out more, click here .
