Union announces intention to redistribute society funding

Your Union has recognised that our provision for societies is under-resourced. Currently the only provision for societies is the part-time Clubs & Societies Administrator and the Concrete Editor’s post. Running at a deficit has prompted us to look critically at how to best use scarce resources.

The four full-time officers and the Chief Executive (Management Committee) last week made the decision that staff resources should be more equitably divided between all societies next academic year, and therefore that another paid Concrete Editor should not be employed but the role should instead be fulfilled by volunteering from within the society - as is commonplace with most student newspapers in the UK.

Discussions are not closed and we are welcoming proposals for compromise from Concrete’s committee and editorial team. The issue will be discussed at Societies Council and Union Council, and we welcome any comments or suggestions you may have.

There are currently no specific plans confirmed for opening out the funding to all societies until the decision regarding the Concrete Editor’s post is confirmed and discussions are closed; but we are fully committed to providing more support for all societies.
