The Library is currently open for 76.5 hours a week during the semesters. UEA's staffed opening hours are better than the average for comparable universities, but the Library building is actually open for less time (excluding the 24-hour IT lab) than these other universities. It would cost a lot of money to open the Library longer, and even more to fully staff the Library at extended times. However, it would be achievable to open the building on the bare minimum of staff (perhaps just security staff). There are lots of self-service options available to you, so you'd be able to use the Library in nearly the same way as you do during the day.

Here's how it could work:

The 24-hour IT lab is always open. If the Library hours were extended to less than 24-hours, the IT lab would have to treated as a separate building, for security reasons - so you'd have to leave the Library and go outside to the IT lab. There'd still be access to a few PCs within the Library building.

NB: the Library is unlikely to open longer on Saturday nights, partly so you can have a night off, and partly because essential upgrades are done during this time, which means the building needs to be closed.

There will be extended opening hours over the exam period. Don't forget to fill in the Library's survey (available 8th May - 6th June in the Library) to let them know what you think. The building will also be open longer than previously on the second May bank holiday - this is in response to student complaints about last year.
