The Eagleman Stag is a unique 9-minute stop-motion animated film which depicts a man’s haunting obsession with the passage of time and his unorthodox relationship with a beetle. Directed by Michael Please, the production was a highly ambition final year film for while studying at the RCA – it is based on a story he previously wrote entitled “The Life and Time of Peter Eagleman”. Orchestral music was integral to this film and composed in tandem with the animation process.

Filmed on an old decommissioned military submarine with 35mm cameras, Deeper Than Yesterday tells the story of a Russian crew who suffer a rather savage form of cabin fever. Directed by Ariel Kleiman, a graduate of the VCA at the University of Melbourne, recently said “the more uncomfortable I feel making a film the better it will be.” Jurors have compared the film to “The Lower Depths,” Maxim Gorky’s best-known play – very Russian with long period of isolation and madness.
Winner of International Short Filmmaking Award at Sundance.

Dir: Ariel Kleiman
Australia - 2010
A detailed and humorous account of a failed bank robbery: A single take where roughly 100 people meticulously recreate an actual event that took place in Stockholm in June 2006. Directed by Ruben Östlund, these events were witnessed first hand along with his producer Erik Hemmendorff while on the way to the Swedish Film Insititute. The film questions the reality of how, really, robberies happen, and what they might or, should, look like. “Making ‘Incident by a Bank’ is a way to correct the false images of robberies we see almost daily in action movies made in Hollywood,” says Östlund.
Winner of the Golden Bear at Berlinale.
Duration: 11.54
Dir: Ruben Östlund
New Europe Film Sales
Sweden - 2009
Inspired by the Argentinian instrumental tango piece entitled “Lluvia de Estrellas” (Star Rain), “Luminaris” tells the story of a man living in a world controlled and timed by light. Each day inhabitants of this fictional world awake and are pulled, as if by some otherworldly force, to their jobs by sunlight. Combining pixilation and stop motion techniques; the surrealist short pairs styles reminiscent of art deco with black cinema. Zaramella explains, "Originally, I approached the project as a puppet animation story, but doing some pixilation tests in the gardens of Fontevraud, just for fun, the seed of the present short was born: the idea of sunlight as a magnetic force.”
Winner of Audience Award at Annecy International Animation Festival
Duration: 6.17
Dir: Juan Pablo Zaramella
Argentina - 2011
A boy learns to play the piano in this rather dark but occasionally humorous mediation on the anxieties and fears of a modern civilized society. Created as a lo-fi animation, “The External World” is a surreal seventeen-minute collection of vignettes which borrows themes from pop culture, cinema and videogames – classic and contemporary. Some have heralded this short as “a unique reconstruction of the universe” while O’Reilly recently noted in an interview, “I like creating experimental films that have an emotional function.”
Winner of Best Animation – Tampere Film Festival
Duration: 16.56
Dir: David O'Reilly

What: Other
Where: UEA Drama Studio
Starts: 18:30:00 |
|
How much?: |
£6.00 / £4.00 (Conc) |
Beaumarchais's Le Mariage de Figaro, on which Mozart based his opera, was written 5 years before the French Revolution. Count Almaviva now regrets the promise he made to his Rosine on marrying her in the prequel, The Barber of Seville, to renounce that sign of feudal and gendered power, the droit de seigneur, because he fancies Suzanne, fiancée of his valet Figaro. His one-track attempts to realise his desires come up against a combination of the spurned Countess's anger and the quick thinking of the arch-improviser Figaro and his resourceful wife-to-be, plus the unexpected discovery of a long-lost mother. Social and gender politics crackle through Beaumarchais's brilliant dialogue and visual imagination, aided by plenty of coups de théâtre. This production is set in the 1920s and underpinned for the second year running by former members of Norwich musical sensation The Oily Rag Band, led by NCA Professor of Animation Suzy Hanna, who bring together Beaumarchais, Mozart and early jazz.
Doors open at 6.30pm - Show starts at 7.30pm

A lot can happen in the course of two years. People walk out of your life, people special to you – people it’s difficult to imagine your world without. Sometimes, they come back. But when they do, they’re not who they once were. Soft features have chiselled. That teenage flush around the cheeks has faded. And suddenly, that ghost that mooched around inside your head is gone, replaced by something, somebody new.
‘Hello Sadness’ is the fourth record by Los Campesinos!, and if 2009’s ‘Romance Is Boring’ marked a giant step on from their genesis – seven kids and a glockenspiel, ricocheting off the four walls of a Cardiff rehearsal room – ‘Hello Sadness’ constitutes another step, and a turn of the corner. Yes, these 10 tracks cover what we are coming to recognise as core Los Campesinos! concerns – love, loss, heartbreak, football (always football). But this is a record that’s wiser and more focused than its predecessors, confident in its abilities and clear in its aims.

Where: The Waterfront
Starts: 19:30:00 |

When sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow formed 2:54 (after spending time in a "grotty punk band") they described their music as something that they needed to get out. They spoke about mind blowing bands like Bad Brains, Queens of the Stone Age (and Brody Dalle’s scary brilliance) urging them to pick up the guitar and make some noise of their own. And, following the ‘totally bloggable’ single ‘Creeping’ in 2010, they’ve been doing just that. Tours with Melissa Auf Der Maur and Warpaint don’t pop up for every band.
Now here they are again, making like the lovechildren of Shirley Manson and PJ Harvey on a moody and yearning B-side. “Something’s got a hold” wails and woahhohhohhhs Colette, over bursts of driving stinging, shreddy and noise that was (funnily enough) produced by long time Harvey collaborator Rob Ellis in a disused fish factory.

|
How much?: |
£14.50 |
Since their conception in 1988, PARADISE LOST have not only founded the genre gothic metal with 1991’s "Gothic", but also diligently defined and daringly transcended it. From the crawling, harrowing doom of their debut "Lost Paradise" (1990) to the electronic sounds of "One Second" (1997) over to the dark rocking punch of "Paradise Lost" (2005), the band’s entire career has been accompanied by the desire to evolve and stay ahead of musical trends and fashions. "Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us" easily and proudly continues this successful tradition and clearly points out that PARADISE LOST are one of the few outstanding acts working hard and earning their legendary status by the power of the song.
