Waterfront Gigs : Marina and the Diamonds

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£17.50

Marina and the Diamonds has had to unfortunately postpone her UK tour, including the date at The Waterfront on 14th May, due to urgent doctors orders. Due to a damaged vocal chord which Marina became aware of three weeks ago and has suffered from vocal problems since, her doctor has advised her to not to sing until the end of May while she undergoes treatment.

The new date will be Monday June 18th. All tickets will be valid for the new date, however if you cannot make the new date please return your tickets (dated 14th May) to Box Office, Union House, UEA, Norwich, NR4 7TJ. All refunds must be claimed by Friday 15th June. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The full statement from Marina is below;

“It is with huge regret that I have had to postpone my UK tour dates due to medical advice. I have been experiencing vocal problems for 3 weeks now and consequently today the Doctor has told me that I cannot sing performance length shows while I undergo treatment, or I could cause permanent damage to my vocal chords.

I am distraught as I was so looking forward to seeing you all on The Lonely Hearts Club tour. The good news is that we have managed to reschedule all the dates - except Leeds which is a festival - starting from the 18th June.  I promise that these shows will be the best I have ever performed for you, as hopefully I will be 100% healthy! All existing tickets will be valid for the new dates and I also promise my Leeds Diamonds that I will see them in the Autumn.

As you know, today is the release date for Electra Heart and the people who buy my records and concert tickets mean the world to me. I hope you understand that not being able to play for you in May is very upsetting.

However, together, we will make the rescheduled June Lonely Hearts Club tour unforgettable.

With all my Love, Marina."

Gleefully melding theatrically lavish vocals and orchestral flourishes of Kate Bush with wonderful pop eccentricities; Marina Diamandis was easily the contender for the most distinctive debut in 2010. This tour showcases new material, the follow up to critically acclaimed ‘Family Jewels’, entitled 'Electra Heart'.

For one night only the best in underground UK Rap & Hip Hop come together under one roof as LONDONS FINEST make their stand in Norwich.

Headlining this unique event is K Koke, who’s been causing a stir in the underground scene with his flurry of mixtapes, freestyles and videos accumulating in excess of 10 million views on Youtube. Hailing from London’s notoriously tough Stonebridge Estate, Koke’s “Fire In The Booth” freestyle for Charlie Sloth’s BBC 1Xtra show has alone had nearly 3 million views, while his debut solo mixtape, ‘Pure Koke: Volume 1’ sold over 10,000 copies as a completely independent release and collected the award for Best Mixtape at the Official Mixtape Awards (where Koke also won Best Male) If this wasn’t enough he’s now been signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation record label making him one of the hottest UK artists right now!

DRU BLU aka Don Strapzy ('Best NewComer' at the 'Official Mixtape Awards') Has had over 2 million views on youtube and sold over 50,000 Mixtapes. From Lewisham, South London he released his debut CD 'Blue Magic' under the name 'Don Strapzy' in May 2010. He followed this with fellow Blue Borough rapper Jack Jones to make 'Blue World Order'. His 2nd Solo Mixtape 'Blue Steel' features Young Mad B, King Zion and other top UK artists such as Giggs, Black the Ripper, SAS & Ghetts, the majority of sales of this mixtape having come from outside of London proving Dru Blu’s nationwide appeal. After his ‘Snack Box’ mixtape in 2011 he is currently working on the forthcoming debut album 'Fingers Crossed' with features from Young Mad B, King Zion, Professor Green, Davinche and The Thundacatz just to name a few, due to be released this year.

Krept & Konan otherwise known as "Play Dirty" are two talented artists from south London who are killing the UK underground scene with their music, crazy punch lines and metaphors. They now they have a massive fan base, had millions of views on YouTube, an award winning C.D "Tsunami" which climbed to #2 in the itunes hip hop chart. They have worked with a variety of UK artists like Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Wiley, Giggs and more. They made headlines recently when after more than 5 million views their version of Jay Z’s Otis was removed from Youtube at Jay Z’s request.

Combine all the above with other red hot UK Rap & Hip Hop artists Political Peak, English Frank, Ard Adz, Sho Shallow, & Mic Righteous and you have one show that you just can’t miss.

The Host on the night is BBC 1Xtra legend Charlie Sloth who’s recent move to BBC Radio 1 (Tuesdays 2-4am) plants him at the top of his game and the perfect choice to host LONDONS FINEST

Waterfront Gigs : The Toasters @ WF Studio

event image

What: Waterfront Gigs

Where: The Waterfront

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£10 / £8 (NUS) Advance

Thirty years ago a bunch of upstarts ignited a spark on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. A spark that fired the imagination of the American music scene, causing a global conflagration. That music was Ska and the band was THE TOASTERS. The 2-Tone sound re-created in their own image by this unruly group of ruffians synthesized the classic 70’s British sound with east side Punk and rock and is now regarded as being the precursor to the Third Wave of Ska. The embers of the legacy bequeathed by The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat and Madness were rekindled and the Toasters hit the road. Hard.

There has been much acclaim from Billboard, the New York Times, Alternative Press, MTV and many others but the band is more interested in playing for the fans. To that end the group has undertaken missions across the globe, playing from Siberia to Istanbul and back, laying down the tracks for others to follow. According to lead singer Bucket, nothing can eclipse the vibes of a sweaty packed-out club with the audience in your face and the bit between the teeth.

It’s important not to forget where you came from. Lots of bands do that but not the Toasters!

If you can't make the new date then please return your tickets A.S.A.P to UNION BOX OFFICE, UNION HOUSE, UEA, NR4 7TJ. When sending tickets back please include a covering letter.

An announcement from the Band reads as follows:

Hey guys

Hope you’re all well.

Writing letters like this is never fun or easy, but it is with heavy heart that we have decided to call time on Fei Comodo. Although it might seem to many of you like this has come out of the blue, in truth it’s something we’ve all struggled with for some time now.

Our band has been together since 2003, and in that time we have achieved so much. Out on the road together, the five of us have played so many great shows and festivals, including both Download and the tent headline at Sonisphere, toured with countless amazing bands both here in the UK and overseas, and we really have made some great friends along the way.

September 2008 saw the release of our mini-album ‘They All Have Two Faces’, which went down really well, and frankly at the time, we were damn proud of it. The plan was then to release our debut full-length a year later. That time came round much quicker than we had anticipated and after a year of touring in support of ‘They All Have Two Faces’, September 2009 rolled around & we didn’t have our album ready! So the five of us, desperate not to fall too far behind on our next release, hit the studio hard at the beginning of November. We wrote & recorded a whole album, that again, at the time, we were all really proud of. This album went on to be named ‘Behind The Bright Lights’.

Unknowingly to us, this was to be the first, & last time we would enter the studio together to record a full-length album.

For a number of reasons beyond our control, it has taken around 3 very long years to get this album released. Over that period we have grown a lot as friends and as a band and although we are pleased to finally be releasing ‘Behind The Bright Lights’ for you all to hear, we simply are not that band anymore and can no longer pretend to be. The reality is that in the time that has passed between us recording this album in November 2009 and releasing it now in 2012 we’ve changed both as a band & as people. To continue when we’re not 100% into what were doing is just not possible for us any longer.

This has been undoubtedly one of the hardest & biggest decisions that the five of us have ever had to make but thank you so much to everyone that came to see us play & followed us throughout this journey. It has been incredible and we don’t regret any of it. Had ‘Behind The Bright Lights’ been released earlier things might be very different, but it is with great sadness to us that now we’ll just never know.

We’re still very much working on the PledgeMusic project and will be making the album available there. You guys have been so supportive of the record there and it means so much. We’ve extended the project by some weeks and for those of you asking about that, the reason will now be clear. We wanted to give as many of you as possible time to get involved in this album before the project closes. Right now, this is where you need to go if you want a copy of the album. We’ll ensure that the main 12 tracks get up on iTunes, Spotify and the other usual download stores but if you want to get the extended version with the extra audio & video - it’ll probably be a 2 disc set - then PledgeMusic is the place to go. We’ll confirm the new release date and all the relevant details on it for you soon.

The full line up for the evening will be: Fei Comodo //  I Divide // Evarose // Fist Full of Lies

£20.00 Advance

Much admired singer/songwriter and previous member of Pulp and The Longpigs, Richard Hawley has proved that he is an exceptional solo artist. Sheffield’s most unlikely pop star is back, and this time he’s rocking out.

Following the excitement and critical acclaim surrounding Richard Hawley’s seventh studio album, ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’, the album charted at number 3, his highest ever entry.

‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’ has received unanimous praise across the board, as once again, Hawley redefines the musical landscape, taking the bold step to challenge himself and his audience. It’s a euphoric album, a sonic assault on the senses, channelling elements of psychedelia, space rock and ragas with heavy riffs and raw, visceral guitar solos as well as more familiar, tender moments.

Following the recent announcement of his first ever show at Brixton Academy on October 3rd, Hawley is pleased to announce the full details of his UK autumn tour which includes Norwich UEA on September 17th.

Following the huge success of the first release on the Richard Hawley Singles Club (‘Leave Your Body Behind You’), the next single will be released in July – details to follow shortly. The Singles Club is a set of four 10” singles being released throughout the next 12 months (more information available at: www.richardhawley.co.uk ).

What: LCR Gigs

How much?:

£15.00 Advance

Technically, Rizzle Kicks was founded in about 1996, when both members, in their miniature form, used to play together round Rizzle's auntie's house. It wasn't until eight years later that the pair reunited after both moving to Brighton and facing each other head-on in a Sunday league football match. Four years later, they ended up going to the same college and one day Rizzle got Sylvester to 'Lalala' all over a track. They soon realised how nicely their styles fitted together. Rizzle was just finishing off his own mixtape, rapping over samples of some of their favourite artists (Gorillaz, Lily Allen, Arctic Monkeys etc) when they officially became Rizzle Kicks.

As a newly formed duo, they started to hustle for beats from local producers and started making their own music videos with a friend of theirs.

Having finally been able to get into a proper studio with some talented producers, Rizzle Kicks have now released their album, a mixture of pop and hip hop incorporating the fun elements of the old school hip-hop era circa 1988-92.

LCR Gigs : Deaf Havana

event image

What: LCR Gigs

Where: LCR

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£12.50 Advance

Fast rising post-hardcore band Deaf Havana was formed in 2005 in Kings Lynn. Having gone from strength to strength since then, the band are now selling out venues across the country (including a packed out show at The Waterfront in April) and their recent album 'Fools and Worthless Liars' topped the UK Rock Album Chart.

Deaf Havana’s brilliant new album ‘Fools And Worthless Liars’ might be a jumble of contradictions – a record written by a self-confessed borderline recluse that’s written to be played to crowds of thousands, a collection of songs about young confusion that sound world-weary and assured – but the one thing it is above all is brutally, beautifully honest. And that’s why it’s so valuable.

Their past has been characterised by a series of were-you-there? moments – did you hear about their European tour in December ’09 when they practically upstaged Escape The Fate? Or their sets at Slam Dunk and Sonisphere last year that were so busy you couldn’t get near the stage? Or Download 2010, when they played a heroic show for a rammed tent? – but Deaf Havana’s future was built in a week. Frontman James Veck-Gilodi had been struggling for months but, during a short break at his parents’ house, melodies and lyrics came tumbling out and he composed 10 demos in one hyper-productive seven-day stint.

“I had writer’s block for ages – I wrote two songs in a year and thought I wasn’t going to be able to write the album,” he explains. “It was a massive relief when they started to come. I felt quite trapped in London, so when I went to the country it all came out.”

Hence why ‘Fools And Worthless Liars’, produced by Matt O’Grady (You Me At Six), has such size, scope and breadth to it – the band were formed almost six years ago as a five-piece in Norfolk but it’s taken this long for them to find their voice. Having recorded and released an EP (‘It’s Called The Easy Life’) and album (‘Meet Me Halfway, At Least’) the band amicably parted ways with vocalist Ryan Mellor, leaving Veck-Gilodi, bassist Lee Wilson, guitarist Chris Pennells and drummer Tom Ogden to regroup.

What came next would take them all by surprise – they ticked off festival performances, BBC sessions and sell-out tours while reworking their old material and starting to showcase new songs as ‘Fools And Worthless Liars’ took shape.

But it took Veck-Gilodi sitting down in a room on his own and stripping everything away before they could blossom into what they are today – one of the UK’s brightest hopes. Take one listen to the disarmingly confessional opening track ‘The Past Six Years’, the glorious ‘Hunstanton Pier’ or the pounding, pulsing ‘Youth In Retrospect’ and it’s clear he’s one of the most unique lyricists in rock today.

“The simplicity of the lyrics is because these are the first lyrics I’ve ever written, and that’s all I can do,” he says. “I didn’t force it. No bullshit, no metaphors; just honesty.”

Hit records, critical acclaim and a huge, devoted fan base are theirs, due in part to their utterly storming live shows and Dreadzone show no sign of slowing down as they announce a host of live dates around the UK this Autumn. The core members Greg Dread, original bassmaster Leo Williams, the unmistakable MC Spee, legendary reggae vocalist Earl 16 alongside Chris Compton on guitar and Bazil on technology make up the current Dreadzone live line up.

Electro-dub pioneers Dreadzone formed in 1993 when ex-Big Audio Dynamite drummer Greg Roberts teamed up with Tim Bran, with the duo soon joined by bassist Leo Williams and keyboardist Dan Donovan, also formerly of Big Audio Dynamite, completing the group’s first line-up. A festival favourite, Dreadzone opened the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury in 1994 and began to bring their unique blend of electro, dub and reggae to a wider audience, going on to chart seven Top 60 singles (including their Top 20 hit ‘Little Britain’) and are still going strong after 18 years.

Dreadzone released The Good, The Bad And The Dread - a compendium of their excellent musical story so far in 2011 and their groundbreaking 1995 album ‘Second Light’ was re-released in March 2012 by EMI as a two disc special edition featuring previously unreleased live concert material. The band are currently writing their eagerly awaited new studio album. As well as live favourites from their back catalogue the band will be showcasing new tracks at their shows this Autumn.

LCR Gigs : Steve Cropper and The Animals (23.01.2013)

event image

What: LCR Gigs

Where: LCR

Starts: 19:30:00

How much?:

£20.00 Advance

Steve Cropper is a musical legend - if Yankee Stadium is “the house that Babe Ruth built,” Stax Records is “the house that Booker T, and the MG’s built.” Integral to that potent combination is MG guitarist extraordinaire Steve Cropper.  Yes, Steve Cropper is a musical legend!

As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Steve Cropper was literally involved in every single record issued by Stax Records from the autumn of 1961 through year end 1970. Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame.

As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay, Knock on Wood and In the Midnight Hour, Steve Cropper is in line for immortality.

Perhaps the ultimate testament to Steve Cropper’s immense contribution to popular music over the last four decades was his ranking by Mojo Magazine as the number two guitarist of all-time (Jimi Hendrix was number one). And in 2003, Rolling Stone magazine readers voted him among the Top 100 Guitar Players of all-time.

As impressive as that is, Steve Cropper’s legacy as a solo artist, member of Booker T. and the MG’s and the Blues Brothers, session musician and producer is far from complete. Steve Cropper loves playing 2013 will see him at the best!

Appearing with Steve are The Animals

…The Animals & Friends are Mickey Gallagher , Pete Barton, John Steel & Danny Handley. Who can forget the hits? House of the Rising Sun, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, Don’t Bring Me Down, It’s My Life, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place…

The Animals were one of the most important British bands of the 1960s. The group is widely considered the raunchiest, the dirtiest, and the most authentic and uncompromisingly raw band of their time. Formed in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, the Animals reflected their earthy upbringing with hard-charging, blues-based rock ‘n roll, deriving much of their early repertoire from American Blues and R&B sources – including (though they barely knew it) from Steve Cropper himself.

The Animals’ career took off in January 1964. With the release of House of the Rising Sun later that year, the Animals became the first British group after the Beatles to chart a Number One single in the USA. Their brooding arrangement of House of the Rising Sun – a traditional folk song recorded by Josh White and Bob Dylan became an early milestone in the British Invasion of the USA.

House of the Rising Sun topped the American and British charts. In fact, it stayed at #1 in the U.S. for three weeks – longer than any single since the Beatles’ Can’t Buy Me Love held down the top spot a half-year earlier. The Animals followed House of the Rising Sun with seven more massive hits, at least four of which – Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, It’s My Life and Don’t Bring Me Down - remain bonafide classics of the era.

Original drummer John Steel and Mickey Gallagher, post-Alan Price pianist (also in The Blockheads since 1977 and Ex Clash) lead the band that joins Steve Cropper for this monumental set of classic original songs from an era that will never be repeated.
