Breast cancer awareness

Last semester the women’s group raised over £60 in aid of breast cancer awareness by selling cakes in The Hive. It was a real success! Not only did we raise some money for a great cause, but breast cancer awareness was also promoted in an arena where it had been previously ignored.

Not many students realise that breast cancer is something that can affect you whatever age you are. Whilst it is more common amongst older women, it is not to say it is uncommon amongst young women in their late teens and twenties. It is therefore important that the UEA Woman’s group raises awareness with issues like breast cancer, and is promoted as a place where women can come to in confidence and receive information and a friendly face.

Here is some very brief advice on how to self examine.

  • Breast self examinations should be performed once a month after your period.
  • Look for any changes in shape
  • Look for changes in colouring
  • Look for changes in the feel of the breast.
  • The most common places to do this are in the shower or lying down on your bed!
