Getting in Touch

Alex Scott is the Union's Women's Officer and co-ordinates the Women's campaign, while also organising the Women's Group. Alex was elected for office in 2006-2007.

Alex

You can contact Alex by email. Or you can come an see her in Union House, upstairs in the Student Offices above the Hive.

Alex sums up why she stood for the position, why a women's campaign is so important and what she hopes to achieve this year:

"It is difficult for me to put into words why the women's campaign is relevant, for it seems to me to be brute fact that women within western society still face oppression. It would be an injustice to just crudely list some of the issues faced by women, because women's issues are so broad and all important. The women's campaign concerns liberation and welfare campaigns that are often interlinked.

PROGRESSING WOMEN IN SOCIETY It is worrying that in the 21st Century women still earn (on average) 17% less than men. That the nations decision making body, our parliament does not represent the gender balance of the people, with only 128 women in the House of Commons out of 646 MPs. This imbalance can be seen within our union, as many of our societies, and indeed the union executive and council are largely male dominated. I hope to encourage women to play an active role in our union and buck this trend. To do this I will be inviting women speakers, liaising with the careers centre and running the annual World Women’s Day.

PROMOTING A SAFER COMMUNITY I propose to run a “Reclaim the Night!” campaign, this would entail organising self defence classes, raising awareness about the availability of rape alarms and continuing the drink spiking campaign. I would lobby the union on making products like “Spika stoppa” widely available on campus. With a large part of term time seeing few daylight hours the need for better lighting to and around campus is imperative, I would lobby the union council to improve lighting in order to reduce risk of attack.

PROVIDING SUPPORT Whilst great support for women exists on campus, I want to publicise its availability further. Issues such as mental health and single parenting require understanding and compassion, I will create forums on our student union website for discussions on such issues to flourish, if paintball soc can have a forum, why cant we?! Finally (at least for now) I want to continue the “Body Beautiful” campaign to empower women.

I stood for women's officer because I am passionate about feminism, and hope that my enthusiasm will encourage others to get involved in what I see as being a very important campaign."
