Fairtrade

The fairtrade campaign at UEA

We are a Fairtrade Student Union and Norwich is a Fairtrade City. So our main aim this year is to achieve official Fairtrade Status for UEA.

The Fairtrade Steering Group is pioneering this- if you'd like to be more involved then you can contact us at su.fairtrade@uea.ac.uk!

Why do we want official fairtrade status?

By achieving Fairtrade status, the University would be making a public long-term commitment to Fairtrade.

By building awareness among consumers of the inequalities of trade, and the implications of their buying decisions, Fairtrade empowers people to challenge the ways trade works. If UEA commits itself to Fairtrade, every member of the University will be able to make socially responsible choices.

Becoming a Fairtrade University will help UEA promote cultural & social awareness among the students and staff through:

• Increased understanding of how our action can affect people thousands of miles away;

• Education regarding different cultures & societies that a knowledge of Fairtrade issues brings;

• Increased feeling of unity between students & staff as consumers, and the Fairtrade producers.

To achieve Fairtrade University status, the Fairtrade Foundation must be satisfied that we have achieved the following 5 goals:

  1. The Students Union and the University authorities both create a Fairtrade policy incorporating these 5 goals.
  2. Fairtrade foods are made available in all campus shops. Fairtrade foods are used in all cafes/restaurants/bars, and where this is not possible a commitment to begin to use Fairtrade foods as soon as possible.
  3. Fairtrade foods are served at all meetings hosted by the University/Union, and are served in all university management offices.
  4. There is a commitment to campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus.
  5. A fairtrade steering group is created.
