WOMEN AND AIDS

Last week, International Women's Day spoke of inspiring women the world over to reach their full potential. People & Planet thought this an apt time to draw attention to the 17.5 million women worldwide living with HIV who, without treatment may never reach their full potential. Young women are disproportionately affected by the AIDS
epidemic. More than 75% of all young people aged between 15-24
living with HIV are women.

Access to treatment for women is essential not only for their
own lives but for that of their children also. The majority of
HIV positive children contract the infection from their mothers
during pregnancy, delivery or whilst breast-feeding.
Mother-to-child-transmission is almost entirely preventable
through various treatment regimes but yet again access to life
saving drugs is based more on the patient's and country's
ability to pay than on need.
