Statement -  NSS Results – Union of UEA Students

The release of the National Student Survey [NSS] results on Thursday (11/9/08) saw UEA students scoring their university as one of the highest in the country.

David Sheppard, the Union of UEA Students’ Academic Officer, said, ”UEA students considered themselves to be well-taught, well-looked after and enjoying a beautiful campus with excellent facilities. Subjects such as Drama, Psychology, Pharmacy, Politics, American Studies and Medicine received some incredibly impressive scores for the quality of their student experience.

Whilst we congratulate the university on these successes, the Union of UEA Students would like to sound a note of caution: in its current unprincipled pursuit of the lucrative international student market, UEA gambles everything. The emergence of INTO, a private provider of English language teaching that received negative coverage in the national press recently, has begun to damage the learning environment that our students value so much and rate so highly. Any university that allows international students to be viewed purely in monetary terms, any university that views some or all of its students as consumers, is destined to see its satisfaction scores suffer. Whilst we hope that our members remain some of the most satisfied students in the country, we think the university must adapt its view of international students to secure its lofty position in the National Student Survey for the future.”
