 Stay Safe

The Union is pleased to report that there have been no further attacks on students on campus. It is still really important to take care though and below are a few tips for staying safe when you're out at night.

o Keep valuables such as mobile phones, mp3 players etc well hidden as they can make you a target for thieves. Don't walk along with your headphones on - you might not hear someone coming up behind you. o Stick to well-lit areas and make sure that you never walk anywhere on your own.

If you're going to be on campus till late, arrange with friends before you go out who you're going to walk home with. o If you're walking from campus to the village, stick to the main road and don't cut through Earlham Park. Many of the attacks on students have taken place in this area and it is very poorly lit.

o If you've been studying at the library till late or if you find yourself in a situation where you have no-one to walk home with, remember you can always phone security on 01603 592352 and they will endeavour to find someone to escort you home.

o You can also go to Nightline (Norfolk Terrace between blocks C and D open 8pm-8am) who have a spare room where you can stay if necessary. They can also phone security on your behalf and have attack alarms.

o There are attack alarms available from Union House reception for £1. There have unfortunately been a number of assaults reported on both students and local residents recently on The Avenues. The police do not believe that these attacks are related to those on campus, but strongly urge anyone who is a victim of crime or has further information to inform them immediately. This will help with their investigations and help enable them to catch whoever is responsible.

If you're walking along The Avenues at night, be sure to take the basic precautions listed above. If you have any more questions or concerns regarding safety please email the Welfare Officer, Emma Kelly at su.welfare@uea.ac.uk or drop in to the Advice Centre on the top floor of Union House.
