Academic Advisor

At the start of their course every undergraduate student is allocated an advisor who can provide information on matters such as course-work and assessment. Students are expected to see their Academic Advisor three times per academic year.

It is important to inform him/her if you are having a problem which is affecting your studies as he/she may be asked to provide evidence of this if you wish to cite your problem when lodging an Academic Appeal.

If for any reason you are unhappy with your advisor and wish to change, you should contact the Senior Advisor in your school who should be able to allocate you another. You should note that changing advisor is quite common practice and will in no way affect your academic record.

Senior Advisors can be contacted through your school office. For research postgraduates your research supervisor should provide a similar role.

UEA Counselling Service

The Counselling Service offer free, confidential counselling to all UEA students and staff. They see people for both long-term and short-term individual counselling, as well as offering a range of group sessions and workshops.

The Counselling Service also has a dedicated educational counsellor, Sarah Hawtin. She provides individual support for students with general academic problems. This can include advice on study skills and help with managing the stresses and strains which so often accompany assessment. Sarah can be contacted through the Counselling Services.

The service is located behind the Dean of Students' Office, and you can book an initial appointment by calling 01603-592651 or e-mail them.

Learning Enhancement Service

The Learning Enhancement team, located within the Dean of Students' Office, provides study skills information, workshops and support for all UEA students. They also offer one-off reviews of academic writing skills - the technical accuracy of your written English - including a personal grammar, spelling and style check (note - this is not a proof reading service). They also provide information booklets and leaflets on a range of academic issues.

Dyslexia Support

The Dean of Students' Office provides a range of support for students with dyslexia and other specific learning needs. They can arrange dyslexia assesments along with providing access to a range of support including note takers and study facilitators. You can contact the Dyslexia Support unit by visiting the Dean of Students' Office or by calling 01603-592761.

UEA Careers Centre

The Careers Centre, located behind the library, offers a range of information, advice and workshops on careers related issues. Along with advice on job hunting after you graduate, this also includes information on skills development, work experience and holiday work.
